Hello! I purchased a set of DeMello Hybrid sliders for my 13 access. I went with bolt-on, which will require 3 drilled holes in the frame on each side if I will be "using them as sliders." Would you say that a center punch and sharp bits will be enough or totally inadequate? 14v drill a joke? :). Thanks for the help! I pick them up in 2 weeks.

What you have will be fine. Just might take a little while to drill all the way through. Start with marking the centers, punch them, start with a small bit (under 1/4") then go for broke with the bigger bits.

P.s. higher speeds with smaller bits, and lower speeds with bigger bits. Heat and drill bits are enemies.

Very nice! I still want some sliders myself, but this lift is first on the project :)

remember to oil the bits as you are drilling this help keep them cool so you dont burn them out. go slow start small and work your way up. and oil often.

Get yourself a step bit. They are expensive but worth it when drilling through the frame.

I used a 1/2" bit to get the center mark on mine then went up in steps from 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", to 1/2". I used a 5/8" electric drill though. I wasn't going to play around drilling forever with a battery.

I hate drilling with big bits. The chances of it grabbing and torquing the entire drill around while you are holding it is not something I like to risk. I love my hands and wrists :)

It's wasn't too bad since I stepped it up as I went. I wouldn't get the 1/2" and just go for it though. It went a lot faster stepping it up in increments. The Tacoma's frame steel isn't a joke. Especially in the rear where it's thicker.

if your going for a 9/16" hole (guessing 1/2" bolt), start with 3/16" or 1/4" and jump strait to 9/16". if you over-size your pilot hole, your asking for some wrist bindage when you try and punch through with your final size.

push as hard as you can (and maintain) until you notice your about to punch through. then let off to light pressure (as light as you can with the bit still cutting) and let the drill do the work.

as long as the bit is cutting, you are highly unlikely to overheat it. keep your drill on high as long as it dosnt overload it. if you have to gear down to low, keep her steady as possible as any sideways or vertical motion will put you in a bind, which can hurt.

your not over-heating a drill bit as long as the shavings it cuts have no color. if you notice gold or blue shavings, (aside from a couple when you punch through), you are running too fast for the amount of material cut. apply more pressure, slow down, or grab a new bit

They make step bits specifically for that purpose. Start with a small pilot and use one bit all the way up to full size.

That's no kidding! Myself and another member on here Acdronin were drilling the frame of mine to mount up my T-case skid plate and holy shit man we ate through about 4 bits until it finally punched through on the second side. This frame really is no joke. It almost makes me not want to touch it at all

That's exactly how we were doing it :p

A transfer punch works well for that too.
