Just noticed a new sound today, a delayed clicking or popping noise right after shifting from reverse to park. When it makes the sound, the shifter knob also moves slightly. The shifter movement and the noise are simultaneous. I had not noticed this previously. Also, when I applied the brake a little more firmly when in reverse while shifting to park, the noise and movement of the shifter knob do not happen...I found this thread describing the same thing, (among other issues): Any input/ideas? Could this be normal and "the parking pin engaging so the truck does not roll back"? My 2005 Tacoma did not have this when shifting from reverse to park...

Is this something dealer needs to check out?

It does sound like the lock solenoid that prevents you from shifting out of park without pressing the brake pedal engaging and disengaging. Shift Lock Assembly and ECU that is in the shifter housing.

To check that it is working: ( basic )

With the vehicle in Park and your foot off the brake you should not be able to shift out of park.
When you press the brake you should be able to shift to any other position.
With the shifter in any position other than park you should not be able to remove the ignition key.
Pop open the small cover and you will see an override button. When depressed it should allow you to shift without pressing the brake pedal.

In the thread posted in the OP from the 4Runner forum, there were several posts stating this was normal. I had just not heard/felt/noticed this before today...

If you apply the brake more firmly, have you noticed if the click and shifter knob movement don't occur?

I think the shift lock should line up better than that ( it should not have to move the shifter when it engages). Since it is under warranty I would have the Dealer look at it at least. It would be documented in the service history, so if there is an issue later on.

I'll have it checked out, thanks. Does not seem quite normal to me.

Not sure, sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't. Ill pay closer attention to it and see. I think it's normal. (Transmission drops to the pavement...)

I verified that all these work as they should. I will have the dealer check to see if the locking pin is slightly out of adjustment, and will engage better with no noise if adjusted. I'll update what I find out.

Took it in to the dealer today. They checked out the sound, said it was normal. I don't always hear it, and my driveway is sloped down from the street slightly, so backing in may put a bit more load on the drivetrain, and cause the more noticeable 'click' when the parking pawl engages. Tech did say to set the parking brake before shifting into park, tried that and no click...

While I was there, they scanned my truck, and something else came up as an issue, some error on the electrical/fuel system. They are checking on that and will advise me on Monday about the fix for what came up.
