    FWIW - Previous Tacos - 2006 SR5 AC Auto 4x4, 2011 TRD OR DC Auto 4x4, Current 2013 TRD sport AC 6speed 4x4

I have owned a few Tacos, and grew up driving on the Beaches of North Carolina in both 4 banger manuals and auto as well as the trucks listed above. I have always always used good tire psi and 4HI when driving on the beach. Never had to be pulled out and had to do a little digging of myself out. A few weeks ago I was out on a local beach with my 6speed Taco and let a little smoke out of the clutch. I was not being hard on the truck, just trying to get moving in deep sand. Someone passed by and suggested I use 4lo and second gear to get started and that got me on my way. Verdict is I am unimpressed with the 6speed after that little adventure. I was liking the manual up until that point. Maybe i was way off base thinking a v6 could pull its self down the beach in 4hi?

The weak link in your scenario, is the clutch.

For city driving the auto is great. But for me I like the manual for off roading. Learn how to use the clutch and you will not smoke it. Simple...

OK, I'm not up to snuff enough with modern auto's to claim if they do or don't hold up longer/better than manuals; but, all this still remains true, as it always has:

If pretty much anything goes wrong inside of an automatic, you're not moving; whereas, even if several of your gears are completely dusted in your manual, you can still get home: do the ol' shift from 1st to 3rd to 5th (or whatever)

If your battery dies, you're screwed with an auto; got a manual? BAM! just pop start that S'om Bit#$ (yeah, I know, pop-starting often requires some foreknowledge so as you're sitting on an incline or have a buddy in tow to give you a push, etc.)

If your battery is still alive, but your engine won't turn over and you're sitting dead at an intersection: you're screwed with an auto; Got a manual?! Clutch Start Cancel that baby and creep off to the shoulder

These things to me = more reliable
You can almost always limp a manual home - or, at least, out of harm's way

For cars I have always owned manuals but for a truck I would definitely pick the auto because its easier to tow with and don't get that sporty feeling you get when you are shifting in a car.

Wait... If the engine won't turn over how the hell are you going to clutch start cancel it unless it isn't turning over because there is something wrong with the clutch sensor?
