I have an 08 tacoma and the defroster is staying on all the time I've tried messing with the wiring behind the lil panel to no prevail.... Also I have a small drip of cold water that drips right on top of my right foot while I have my foot on the pedal. Don't know if that's associated with the defroster stuck but I would like to figure that out also

Mine always has been on with the A/C too. And I've had 3 second gens that were the same way so I assume it's normal. Water dripping on your foot isn't though. The evaporator drain is probably clogged and it's filling up the HVAC box and happens to be dripping on your foot. Cleaning out the drain (where the water is supposed to come out of the box) will probably fix that problem.

    Are you saying:

    1. If you have the thing on front vents only on the rotary selector, then press the AC button, it switches back to the windshield defroster?

    2. If you switch it to windshield defrost on the selector, then AC is always on.

#1 would be very odd! #2 is normal in every vehicle I've ever owned.

There is a mod to disable #2 but it makes defogging your windshield in the winter much tougher since AC tends to condense moisture out of the air as it passes over the heat exchanger.

    It's normal.

The A/C actually cycles on/off so the compressor isn't engaged all the time and the hit on gas mileage is very small if even noticeable. I'd just leave it alone personally.

On my 2009 and 2013 I just push the A/C button to turn it off.

The light goes out, the compressor stays on in windshield defrost mode, guaranteed.

It's sticking out of the firewall in the engine compartment on the passenger side. Looks like a rubber hose a few inches long.

Just a little info too. Don't go cramming your hands up in the dash on the drivers side. The heater core lines come in right there. Ask me how I know.....

That is STUPID. I need to test because I notice a diff in the air when I do.

Pretty much standard across the auto industry now. Last car I had that I could turn off the AC while on defrost was my 87 Corolla.

I turned it off in my Ford about half the time. I know it was off because the air was different. There were times I had to turn it back on because it was humid. Also I could gear and feel the compressor. If the little switch does turn off the A/C then WTF is it there?. Maybe just to turn off A/C went you want fresh air out the front vents? I do this a lot when the temp is not high enough for AC but want some air. I know it turns off in that setting.

The AC is on when the defrost is selected because it runs the air through the HVAC system to dry it out. No sense in blowing damp air on something you are trying to dry off. Bottom line is that it's normal.

I wish I could turn mine off in winter. Seems stupid to intentionally cool air when you're trying to defrost the windshield. Takes longer to heat up the car too.

Makes sense in the summer, but not so much in the winter (at least here in Ohio). I'd just like to have the choice.....

If you flip the selector to floor vents you also get air flow from your defroster vents, so you don't have to run the A/C compressor in the winter. If you have an auto tranny, if you pre-start your car in winter and put it in gear ( I use the e-brake and a wheel chock) it heats up in about a quarter of the time.
