    Yes they are recessed under the bed rail and It would be a challenge to damage them.

    I accidentally did just that. Loading 3 large dirt bikes in my bed, I jammed a spiked foot peg on my dirt bike under the rail, pressing up and yes did damage the light strip.

    If someone does something like this, let me know and I can send you a replacement light strip.
