Your gas mileage will improve as you get more miles on it. I have 12,000 on mine and it's getting better with normal use as the engine wears in.

Imo, Toyota should offer this particular truck with 5spd manual as well as automatic.

OP: Here are a few threads regarding DCSB 2.7 mileage if you haven't read them yet.

True but after owning a 2.7 ext cab for 12 years and going to the 2011 V6 it is a world of difference. My truck is only a year and a half old and has 40K miles on it. When I want to pass someone I want the power to be able to do it and also be able to tow. I see where your coming from with the better gas mileage. I'm not as concerned with it as you are. Mine is lifted with 33's and I avg 17.2 mpg. For me that's awesome for a lifted truck.

After just driving one like yours I just wasn't impressed with it. Seemed like it was lacking power with that configuration. Mine also has the 5 speed auto instead of the 4. I didn't mean to come across as putting your truck down if it sounded that way. That's just not the truck for me. Your getting damn good mpg out of it and I'm sure like tooter said it will improve with more miles. I know mine did.

20mpg is really good for any truck IMO. Ford, Chevy, and Dodge are now spouting 22mpg-25mpg in their new 1/2 tons now. It'll be intersting to see how well all trucks do in the coming next few years when the Govt expects them to increase current numbers.

You can increase your FE, just not cost effectively.

Shed weight, especially in wheels and tires, LRR tires, lower it, custom aero topper, drive with load, and start researching hypermiling techniques and your FE will inevitably rise.

That's no problem!!! I just removed the secondary filter yesterday and seem to notice a difference in excelleration..... My aFe air filter will be in Wednesday. It was amazing though that I could drive my ZR1 from Lafayette,la to destin, fla and avg. 29 to 30 mpg driving in 6 gear at 70 mph with rpm at 1425!!!!!! Thank you for your post!!!

Another buyer fooled by Toyota using the EPA system to it's advantage.

All 2wd from base 5-lug to double cab pre-runner gets the same 20/25 rating. You can probably get 25mpg on the highway running 55-60. 5-lugs can crush the epa rating easy, but not the pre-runner, especially 4-door, sorry.

Forget about an air cleaner (or removing the charcoal filter) giving you better mpg, it doesn't help.

Fantastic news! I get 21-22 on the freeway, and I'm only at 1500 miles on the clock.

Yes, wheel lugs. The standard 2wds all have 5 lug wheels, and are affectionately referred to as 5-lugs.

Your pre-runner is the only 2wd that has 6-lug wheels, hence an easy descriptor. Easier than non-pre-runner.

Read this, it concludes there is no mpg to be found with air filters.

Simple reason, at part throttle and mid rpm the air filter isn't a restriction compared to the throttle plate which is intentionally choking the air supply. The computer is getting feedback from several sensors and adjusting fuel use accordingly and there is nothing the air filter can do to influence those things. Might have made a difference with a carburetor, but no more.
