Practice with both eyes open. Do you have an Aimpoint? If you do get good shooting with both eyes open with that, then switch to the ACOG. What I have found is if I back off of the scope a bit the reticle appears larger and its easier to shoot close range with both eyes open. If you treat it like you do with the aimpoint you will be able to get it on target very quickly. Not necessarily as easy as you would with the aimpoint but with practice you will be on it. It took me training with it for the past few classes to get with the program. The key to this is the key to everything, practice practice practice.

The things required to pull bitches
Talk about optics I'm looking at the Nikon p223 3-9x40 and 4-12x40
I can't decide which to choose. The ranges out here goes up to 600 yards. I plan on just hitting 200-300. Maybe 600 for shits and giggles. I'm thinking the 3-9x40 is enough right?
    It's a 20-30 dollars difference between those 2

If anyone knows about 3gun or comp shooting please chime in... I was curious to know why the 1-4x power scopes are mainly used over fixed 4 powers (I E ACOG) with a doctored red dot..???

I have the 3-9 but am only shooting max 400 yards, works great for me at 300 or closer. I would prolly want more if I was shooting 600

I believe it stems from the regulation that requires the weapon to stay in the same configuration for the entirety of the competition. This means that one cannot switch the optics out between rounds. Thus, a variable scope can be adjusted for short range - 1X - and long range - 4X - without changing the configuration of the weapon. It depends on the range setup, but I believe that some rounds are mostly (if not all) short range targets, and then other rounds include the longer range targets (out to 300 m).

I have never shot a 3-gun competition, but I read a lot of the rules as I was building my AR-15, which I will hopefully use to shoot in 3-gun competitions when I finally settle down at my permanent duty station.

I hope this helps. I know I'm not qualified to answer, I'm just trying to pass on what I learned in case you don't receive a better answer. If someone has more experience, please confirm or refute this.

If your shooting 600 you need to step up the caliber. .223 isn't exactly "optimal" for long range

Yea that's exactly what I was thinking until I watch some people run the duek defense offer irons... But I think your right about the depending on the match and the kind of tools that are allowed...

I'd go with the 4-12, it gives you more options at range, JMO
I don't know squat about 3gun but I imagine they'd go with variable power as its more options.

You can do 600 minute of man easily with .223/5.56. 18 inch SPR set up with the right optic and 75-77gr bullets is pretty damn accurate.

Yup, 600 is def doable on even a service colt A4 and iron sights. Got a buddy that went to PMI school and he was hitting paper on an army's 1000 yard range.
