I was in Hubbard on Saturday for the Hop Festival/family reunion. Scored a nice M61 ammo can for $8 at a garage sale

Alright gentlemen, my 7.3L Powerstroke is being a little bit of a pain. I've got a sound going on that sounds like a knock but it's not as loud as a bottom end bearing knock. It only occurs when the engine is warm and it goes away as soon as the throttle is depressed at all.

First of all - any thoughts? I think it is probably an injector. However, I've really backed off trying to fix this thing myself. It's a pain in the ass and I have better things to do with my time honestly.

Secondly - does anyone have any recommended shops that work on diesels in the Eugene area? I went to Oregon Fuel Injection for an oil leak a while ago. But they are not really a repair shop, that was pretty clear by the prices they wanted to charge. It basically seemed like "Yeah... we'll work on your truck. For the right price." They really only want to sell fuel system parts to other shops. Not have to do the work themselves.

Any input you guys want to throw out would be awesome.

Ha. When I want a 1/4 of the truck for the same gas mileage, i'll be back

EDIT: That's not to say I'm a hater. I would buy a 4Runner in a heart beat. Just as pick-up trucks go I want to stick with the bigger rigs.

 I just wanted to give you shit. Seems like you've had a few issues with the diesel, and I have no knowledge or advice other than crass remarks.

If I saw the truck I'd be able to tell you for sure but my online guess would be an injector. My advice, get rid of the truck. The only thing Ford has going for them is a good automatic transmission. Everything else is a pos. I've had a 7.3 and 6.0 and I was always repairing them. Not only does it suck that they break down all the time but they're a huge pain in the ass to work on. That engine bay is packed. I switched to a 6.7 cummins and it's a much better set up. I've had a 6.0 and a 6.7 and I've been happy with both.

I'm not in a financial situation to be swapping rigs anymore. I have been around enough people that have many, many miles on the 7.3 without too many issues that I won't be jumping ship.

You owned a 6.0 cummins? Do you mean 5.9? The main problem with the cummins is the fact that they're in a Dodge truck. The truck falls apart around the engine.

I have a 97 Powerstroke with 330k on it and have never had a problem :) sounds like a sticky injector to me!

    This is mine!

Nice! Yeah I'm diving deep into forums to read about what it could be. I finally found one that sounds completely like mine. Goes away above idle and isn't present when the truck is cold.

Yes, 5.9. I had an extra .1 litre of Cola next to me at all times :D. I agree the that older rams sucked as far as build goes. The new ones are nice though. I had 2010 (sold to my dad) 3500 Laramie. Out of all my trucks, that one was the nicest. It has 57K on it now and no problems so far and I don't expect any. If I were to buy another truck it would be a 2010+ Ram. I'm done with Ford. I've had too many problems with them to ever go back. If you want to swing by Seattle I'll take a look at your truck for you.

I'm all the way down in Eugene but I appreciate you willing to help. I'm a lifelong Ford guy. Served my family well for a long time. I'm open to cummins as well, just will never touch a Chevy.

They do make pretty sweet kits to drop a 5.9 cummins into this truck, Ford tranny and everything. That would be sweet.

    Me too. We'll see.

My friend just did a cummins conversion in his 08 powerstroke and he said its the best decision he ever made. But cost him upwards of 15k to do.
