Folding Tonneau Cover

Well, I recently came into a few $'s and have decided to put that towards a tonneau cover for my 2013 DCLB Tacoma. I've researched a little & it seems that a hard folding tonneau would be the most secure & versatile option to meet my needs. Some of the features that are important to me are being water tight, secure, ability to use the truck bed, & durable (as I plan to own the truck for 10 years or so).

The 3 covers I have narrowed it down to are:

Fold-A-Cover G4 Elite - Pros: Ability to open cover at either end, has a good locking mechanism, ability to use the Toyota Rail system, seems fairly watertight.
Cons: The most difficult to install, takes a few tools to remove the cover to use the entire truck bed

BakFlip (not really sure on G2, Fibermax, or F1) - Pros: Easy installation, nice flush look, folds out of the way to completely utilize the truck bed
Cons: Can't use Toyota Rail system, A lot of people say it leaks, can open with a coat hanger.

Extang Solid Fold: Haven't heard a lot, one way or the other, on this model.

I just wanted to get everyone's opinions on the 3 options to help make a decision, but I'm open to other suggestions as well

 

Right or wrong, I went with a Extang Solid fold. It looks good and is relatively secure. You do maintain use of your rails which was a major deciding factor for me. It is heavier than the other two. I don't have an issue taking it off / putting it back on by myself. I’ve had it thru one winter. Be sure to treat the foam seal with a weatherstrip treatment. It will keep them from freezing to the rails. One last bit of wisdom, If you get it DON’T wax it. I hit mine with Griots Paint sealant. It didn’t like it. It was a bear to get off and seems to have softened the paint in a few spots. Nothing terrible but “I know its there”... Type of thing.. Good Luck!

 

I have an Undercover Flex on my '11. Its a great cover for what it does. Now, you don't get to keep your rails which I knew going in but other than that no complaints with the cover. However, in hindsight I with I would have went with an one piece hard cover instead but that's nothing against the Flex itself.

I had an Extang Trifecta on my previous truck. It was super easy to take off/put on the truck. It did leak a some water in heavy down pours. I've been kind of up in the air about the longevity of the finish of the Extang Solid Fold. Saw a 4 or so year old Solid fold on a different make/model truck in the parking lot at work & it looked fairly faded & beat. How's the finish on yours holding up? Thanks for the tips!

 

Friend of mine has the Extang hard trifold on his and his cracked under the vinyl top. Can't really tell much until you push on it and can really feel the large crack through the middle. We got hit hard over night with a heavy snow storm and by morning it did it in. I have a soft trifold on mine and the same one on my dads. Love it so much better than my last roll up one because you can still use the rail system. I don't think you'll have that problem with heavy snow down in Atlanta though. To add to it as well, Extang really backs there product and their customer service was pretty good. My dad cracked one of the joints on his and there was a new one at the house in about two days.

Tri-fold, hard cover protection, no exposed fold seams to leak as the other designs have, 10 year warranty on the vinyl & lifetime on the rest, generally the lowest in price.

 

Interesting... I didn't know that they made a hard fold cover. Definitely going to check them out.

 

My Fibermax has been solid for over a year. Works great.

 

I installed the G4 elite. I love it the install was lengthy but not overly difficult. The time comes in the adjusting everything for a good fit. Water will get in a little bit so don't be surprised about that. The one thing I don't like are the rubber seals on the front and rear they suck. But I think you can pop rivet them on for a better fit. Overall I do like the cover great for my needs.

 

Just installed bakflip HD. Love it. Looks great, easy install, doesnt leak yet.
I'm happy , just need a poplock tailgate.

 

I recently bought a TonnoPro soft cover. Looks good but does leak a little water. I've had multiple covers on past trucks including a roll up Pace Edwards. They all have leaked a little water. Quality on the TonnoPro is decent on the frame and vinyl and the warranty is the best I could find. The hardware is a bit lower in quality, feels a little cheap. For the price, however, it was worth it for me. Delivered to the door for under $270.00.

 

I paired my Fold-A-Cover with a Pop-N-Lock.
It took some effort to set it up but two years down the road I am grateful.
With the new handle I did not install the "D" ring in the tailgate.
TVD is my daily driver and grocery-getter.
Under the rear hatch is the cargo net strung from the still usable cargo rails.
Under the front are pair of inexpensive totes to corral anything put there.
Have more than once driven more than a hundred miles with 3/4 bed open and furniture in the back.
And once there were three mountain bikes locked under the cover while we ate dinner after a days ride.
I never attempted to make it water tight but what gets in now is nominal and I sure I could make it so without too much effort.
Also I got a discount from Truck Alterations being a TW member. Excellent service as well.
I run my trucks until they are old and grey. I am sure this cover will still be on it until then.

 

G4 with pop and lock here too. I agree the install is lengthy but not that difficult. water leaks are minimal during a heavy down pour in my neck of the woods. Almost a year since I've installed it with plenty of compliments from all my friends and strangers. Worth the $$$ when I choose the G4 over the Backflip one

 

After some lengthy research here on TacomaWorld, I'm starting to lean towards the Extang Solid Fold. It seems to get pretty good reviews here, although it is not nearly as popular here as the BakFlip. The main features that are swaying me is that it is fairly water proof, I can still use the Toyota rail system, & if I need the truck bed, it takes all of 2 minutes to remove. My only concern is how durable is the finish on the cover? Does is scratch easy? Will the finish last the life of the truck or will it fade, chip, etc?

 

Plus it locks.

One improvement they can make along with the front and rear seals would be a quick disconnect system rather than the 4 screws that need to be removed in order to remove the cover entirely. Somewhat of a hastle, but not terrible..only takes a few minutes...just carry a 10mm socket wrench in the truck with you and you are set to go. As far as leaking, mine leaks very little, nothing to really complain about from me. Although if you regularly carry stuff in your bed that can become damaged by water, you can store that stuff in a rubbermaid container...just a thought.
