Paint for plate bumper?

I have a Pelfreybilt bumper coming hopefully this week and don't know what I want to use to paint it. Any suggestions as to what to use/avoid? I'm thinking about using a bed liner (herculiner, rustoleum)

I wouldn't use the Rustoleum Bedliner. I used that on all my stuff and am kicking myself for it. It has not held up overly well and flakes off. You will find yourself needing to repair it annually.

 

I know you're asking for paint opinions.. But I'd get it powder coated.

 

Yeah, am thinking Herculiner or going for the POR15.

Never. If I wanted PC I would have had it done when it was built. I'm too scared of scratching it up and then feeling like I wasted $150

 

I second powdercoat option. My ARB came powdercoated and I had my bruteforce done as well. The powder is very resistant to scrapes and rubs. I've pushed over small trees with the ARB and had an incident with an apartment gate and the only thing that shows is a little rub mark on the surface.

 

POR 15 is good stuff, especially since it's new metal and you can properly prep it.

Powder coating isn't a bad option since it completely protects the metal underneath. I have a few powder coated accessories and I've bedlinered over every one of them. The powder coat just acts like an incredibly durable (and expensive) primer as far as I'm concerned but it also means someone else will do the initial prep and lay down a solid base coat rather than dealing with raw metal.

 

I'm planning on POR15. I'm just hoping someone around here has it cause I found out my bumper is gonna be here Thursday or Friday and I have a car/truck show sunday that I want to put my truck in if I manage to get it installed by then, so I don't have time to wait for shipping really

 

use POR-15....i got their metal cleaner with it as well (still have some left over if you want the two bottles of prep you can come pick them up)

but yea the POR-15 is some good stuff make sure u wear crap clothes and GLOVES the stuff stays on ya for a long time.

once i let it dry some (still tacky though) i used the rustoleum bedliner spray to finish it off.

It has held up real nicely other than a few spots where i rubbed up on a tree at rausch but easy nuff to just respray it

 

u can use the prep stuff...but i dont have any POR-15 left...maybe a few dabs but not enough for a bumper. id say order it now and have it rushed for shipping

 

I like my Line-X, but it may affect how things line up. I have the brackets from BAMF that tie the bumper in longer down the frame, and I had to order new ones with custom measurements because the Line-X threw it off that much. It also adds some weight. Just some thoughts.

I had to redo a powdercoated plate bumper on the jeep last year and repainted with rattlecan black, seems to hold up just as well and easier to maintain.

Just get it good and clean before priming. Some of the Sherwin-Williams industrial enamels are good, they just need to be redone as they fade in the sunlight after a few years.

No matter WHAT you coat it with, they will take offroad abuse and need to be redone.

Thanks for the info too. I figured I'd have a couple cans of spray on liner to coat it before it gets installed.

solid 6-7 hours away, well just order it up maybe even call them and get a rush delivery might be ur best bet

 

Haha Okaayyy. Guess you should specify what kind of money you're willing to spend and more details next time you ask people's opinions. Because more people than not would probably agree powder coating is more durable than paint in general, which would explain why most the places fabricating these off road parts use it.
If you're worried about cost, a lot of times places that powder coat will give you a better deal if they have some other parts they will be doing the same color you're wanting, and I would imagine you're wanting black, which is a common color for most shops to be doing, so you probably wouldn't have to wait long. But sounds like you don't want it so I'm probably wasting fingerer energy. Either way, good luck with it.

I would say it's probably possible to have it done for that like I'm saying, then you wouldn't even have to mess with painting it, you would just have to go and talk to somebody at a good shop, they'd probably want you to have it sanded good before bringing it, just my opinion.

 

I don't mind spending the time on it. I would be happier doing it myself simply because I enjoy the satisfaction
