I agree with the LOADED gun part. However, I do doubt that it would take an individual less than half of a second to draw from a concealed stance and fire ACCURATELY. If they do, they should be competing. Not to mention most encountered 'threats' are not that highly trained to begin with, or even trained at all.

Perhaps the most important factor in a gun fight is to be aware of your surroundings. If available, you first find COVER, then find out where the target is and return fire. Obviously TIME and DISTANCE will also be important factors.

I will say that I agree that it is a disadvantage if I got into a close-in fist fight or got jumped. When I am not with kids, I carry with a round chambered.

    Yet.....
I guess you play the odds and take your chances. If you obey the 4 main rules of gun safety, you'll be safe as you are with any other dangerous object.
You treat EVERY gun as if it's loaded until you know it's not. I would hate to need it ready to fire and find out it's on an empty chamber.
Also, a revolver ALWAYS has a round in the chamber. Does that make it unsafe? Nope because the safety is between your ears.

Well, to be honest, I no longer own any guns. I did when I was younger, but I never used them. I sold my chainsaw too for the same reason. But I live in a town where we had the first murder in 5 years last week and only one shooting I can remember in the last 3 or 4 years. But working as an EMT a saw people who has been shot by their own wepons when they wrecked their car. Just seems to me that the benefit doesn't out weight the risk.

I'm going to go ahead and say you have no idea what you're talking about. A gun doesn't shoot itself during a car or bike crash. I could throw my loaded pistol against a brick wall and it won't fire. If you shoot yourself, then you have terrible safety practices (keep finger off the trigger) and shouldn't have been carrying a gun.

I don't know if this has already been visited, because I have not read all 24 pages so far, but I would think it best to always have one chambered for the simple reason that the firearm would be useless if for some reason you had your other hand occupied or disabled for some reason. I don't see a way to chamber a round with one hand.... Just my $.02 worth.

Also, you should know how to rack your slide without using your other hand. Do not practice with a loaded weapon. You can chamber a round with one hand by utilizing the side of a table, your belt, other person head, etc... leverage against another object. Should one hand be disabled in an altercation (knife, etc) you need to be able to cycle the slide one handed.

I carry chambered. My gun.s have never gone boom without me making them go boom. I dropped my carry once in the garage (pissed me off, small chip). It did not go boom.

probably a good thing too. Do you have any links to these EMT type accidents, since I belong to several gun forums and youtube channels for a long time and I have never heard of a gun going off during an auto accident that didnt' have a finger in the triggerguard. Maybe you saw alot of drive by shootings gone wrong in your town of 1 murder in 5 years. Or you're just a closet anti and full of it.

I don't care if people own guns, I'm just saying that I have seen accidental shootings, and that I personally live in a place where the idea that I would need to defend myself at a seconds notice is not really the case. Its just a difference of opinion and circumstance, and my limited experience. I'm not saying don't do what you think is best. But don't assume that becuase I don't own guns anymore I'm some how Anti-Gun, guns are fine. I just wanted to make the point that there isn't always a need to camber a round and that accidents that can be prevented happen to people. And I did say I would be in the vast minority here...

You've seen guns discharge in car accidents and motorcycle accidents? What kind of guns? Remington 700s? I'm pretty skeptical of your statement. Especially since a cursory google search turned up no reports of an accidental discharge occuring during/from an automobile/motorcycle accident, anywhere, or at any time. If you have seen multiple incidents I would expect there to be some evidence. Do you have any links to news articles?

As an anecdote to back up my skepticism, I offer a story. I was thrown off of a running horse directly onto a large rock. Between my hips and that rock was a Colt 1911 with a round in the chamber, hammer cocked, and safety on. Once I got my breath back and was able to stand up I checked the gun. Safety was still positively engaged, and the hammer had not moved. I took the gun out of the holster, cleared the chamber and field stripped it. Other than some cosmetic damage, everything was fine. If I ever thought there was a chance of a negligent discharge from such an incident I would not carry a loaded handgun on a horse.

    If you doubt it then,
    1. You didn't read the case study. It's not only proven by Force Sceince. This isn't something that's just made up. It has been tested, and tested, and tested, and tested...repeat.... It's fact.
    2. You're very nieve.

I'm not a hard core competitor, but my split times sometimes are in the .3s if I get a clean motion.... These are 10 and 20 yard shots.

I have ran rescue calls (fire and EMS) in a rural environment (lots of guns and type A personalities) for over 15 years. I have never seen, heard, or read of anyone having an AD in an auto accident. Every time a firearm has discharged, someone had their finger on the trigger.

Unless your part of the world breeds some special kind of dumbass who deliberately shoots themselves when they wrap a car around a telephone pole, I'm ringing the BS Bell on you.

Funny you should tell that story, as the 1911 was designed as a Calvary handgun. ;)

Less the seeing the accidental discharges.
I just think the risk out weighs the reward.
TBH I don't really carry unless I'm going to the range of just feel like it for some weird reason.

The only people who think its a risk are those who don't carry.

Not naive, I read the study and it gave good insight, however those times showed that the suspects had their pistol already drawn and at their sides.

I respectfully disagree. I have worked with/trained with some of the most highly experienced shooters around, and anything below a 1.5 is respectable. A sub .5 second well-placed shot from a concealed holster with an outer garment is unheard of.

It takes 1.4 seconds for a Master class IDPA shooter to fire from a duty holster:
