This is the first time I'm building an AR, and the first AR ill have. I haven't set a budget, and instead decided to get good parts when the price is good

my first upper was a 18'' 1-8 Hbar, and my next build is gonna be a 14.5 pinned and welded, probably in 300 BLK, then build another in 5.56.
i bought the 18'' before i knew we were moving, and the 18'' barrel is a pain in the woods.

For those considering doing the pinned muzzle device & 14.5" barrel I would strongly encourage not doing this. You're saving about an inch and a half and creating a big PITA down the road. It might be exactly what you want now but if you ever change your mind you'll wish you hadn't permanently attached your muzzle device. The best bet is doing a 16" upper or SBRing your lower and going with something much shorter to make it worth your time if length is a concern.

I'm leaning towards a 16 inch barrel, and a quad rail, how I set everything else up I don't have a clue. I'd rather have something that has good mobility

I also know that I want to be able to shoot the heavier bullets as well.

Quad rails are good but also consider a simple MOE handguard as well as a keymod rail. For most users a MOE handguard is a great solution that's lightweight, inexpensive, easy to install & offers modularity for adding items such as lights, VFGs & other accessories. I like the Keymod rail from the likes of Noveske, BCM & others because it gives you a more narrow tube to grip w/o the need for rail ladders and such to protect from snags and softer the grip a touch.

I hadn't seen the key mod rails before, I like those. I have been considering a magpul foregrip to match the stock and pistol grip

Check out the BCM keymod rail as they make quality stuff for what you pay. I like the Noveske the bestest but you pay for the name. There's a couple other manufacturers getting on the keymod bandwagon and I think there are like a half dozen different ones out there now.

Magpul MOE stuff is phenomenal for the price tag. I would say the pay the extra few bucks and get the MOE+ hand grip as it's better than the MOE. If you have a MOE handguard they make a special VFG that fits that handguard slot w/o the need for any additional rails or hardware. There's a few makers of light attachments that also use those as well as various other accessory attachments. It's pretty popular.

Since it's your first AR buy quality entry-level parts that will accommodate whatever you decide to do along the road and put the rest in ammo and training. Best money you ever spent.

First thing in doing once I get done with the build is buying a set of 223/556 reloading dies and components, I can pick up brass at the range (picked 750 rounds of brass in 2 months going one time per week)

I'll be putting some thought into the magpul foregrip, and the keymof rails.

I know I want a flat top upper though, might get some magpul back up sites after I get glass

Yeah, flat top upper is a given these days unless you're doing a retro build. Get your Magpul MBUS first and learn to use them. Then buy an optic, zero and learn to use it. Buying an optic before some sort of backup sights let alone training with them to know how to use them is fail.

It's a good school to learn from. Cutting corners with basic functions is a bad idea.

Sweet! Glad you got yourself one. You'll love shooting it.

My patrol rifle is an original 60s model Colt M16A1 with nothing but the irons and I absolutely LOVE it

brutally accurate and smooth...i prefer it over my BCM flat top with magpul sights :anonymous:

I was going to buy a 10/22 a few months back but I can't find .22LR around me so that detered me. I have a 22 pistol that I haven't shot in months and didn't want the same to happen with the rifle. I've now switched my sights on a larger caliber rifle instead :D
