I own a 2012 Dble Cab 6spd MT with a TRD short throw shifter that has an intermittent rattle coming from underneath the truck over bumps and rough roads. I have noticed this virtually since purchased new and at my 10k service I finally had time for a local dealership to look into this. I will not go into the run around I received at the dealership but the rattle is only present when in neutral or the clutch petal is pushed in. If you are experiencing this issue park your truck an leave it in 1st gear. Crawl under your truck and try to spin the drive shaft to the rear. It will not budge. Then park in neutral (with the PB on of course so you don't die) and crawl under the truck. Spin the drive shaft and you will find you have about half an inch to an inch of free travel in either direction and when you get to the stop in either direction you will hear a nice CLANK coming from what sounds like the transfer case. Go back and forth and enjoy the CLANK CLANK CLANK you have been hearing and trying to identify. Now. Should I believe the dealership in their assumption that this play in my drive train is "normal"? Anyone else have this issue? :frusty:

TRD Exhaust, Mobtown bolt on sliders and aluminum tailgate reinforcement, Reverse lights changed to yellow turn signals, LED pods added for reverse, ADD W1 oil catch can, Total Chaos bed reinforcement, rear diff breather to taillight mod, 12" combo led bars behind lower grill wired to high beams, Toyota led bed light kit, 400 watt anytime mod, SSO slimeline front bumper.

I have the same sound that is driving me crazy as well. The dealertold me the same "normal amount of play". Does every manualsound like it is going to fall apart when you have it in neutral or the clutchin and go over the slightest bump?

These noises drive me crazy. This new truck makes a ton moremechanical clanking noises from the drivetrain than the 02 manual I sold to getit, and the 02 had 120,000 miles on it.

I also have some vibration/rattle when I go to take off at slow speeds aswell (I’ve already checked the exhaust).

Does every 2nd gen manual make this much noise from the drivetrain?

Mine too, 2012, 6sp trd. Way too much driveline play imho. Also get the chatter/hop/vibration sometimes when starting from a stop, usually right after its been sitting for a week or so, makes me feel like I can't drive stick worth a damn, and that pisses me off. It takes a whole different approach to drive smoothly than most other manual trans vehicles I've owned.

Yeah man, at 7000 miles my 2012 MT DCSB OR had what I consider >130k mile lash also, pretty bad. Look around online and you'll find recommended specs for lash, Taco manual box (made by Aisin) is cheapo crap and the loose tolerances in the prop shaft to diff make it all worse. They gotta have a spec for it in their engineering books somewhere - I was just never sure where to go to get that info.

Due to drive line probs occurred since new until 17k miles, (my theory is all the probs I had are traced back to the driveshaft shudder) I took Toyota to arbitration via CDSP and won, got 100% of my money back 2 weeks ago. But what I really wanted was those bastards to admit fault, apologize for all the run around and take responsibility... still waiting on that.

I'll do a post when I get time, will describe process and share images.

I agree. Auto tranny absorbs a lot of the slop due to the slippage in the torque converter imo.

Mine went to the dealer today, I highly suspect they'll say it's a "normal" amount of slop.
Edit. Yup, driveline lash, slop and clunking is "normal" for a Taco. Nothing wrong. meh. They are replacing something in the steering though to cure a "clunk" I've been having when turned and going over bumps, like pulling into a drive way. You win some, you lose some.

I don't know. I have owned 4 cars with a MT. Including a 99 taco that I drove for well over a decade and never had anything like this. Hell. My 99 had no rattles at all up until the day I was forced to sell it back to Toyota. Frame was rusted to shit and the clutch squeaked like crazy but it was tight. Given I am not the only one out there with this issue I guess I am just surprised they have gotten this that wrong. Especially with how long the 2nd gen has been around. I do applaud Toyota for even offering the MT to such a small segment of the market that actually want one. But seriously. Thanks for the replies.
