I think if it covered more horizonally it would be cool, The vertical throws my eye off the main point of the picture, Love the reflection though man!

I agree, unfortunately there was a drainage pipe heading under a road and whole mess of dead bushes just to the right of the pond. I thought the vertical image was less annoying than the pile of crap that would have been present if the view was just a foot wider.

I looked at cropping the pic to make it shorter, but then the tree looks weird to me. It just kind of gets cut off. Not sure how to fix that.

Speaking of lightning pics. I for got I had these. They are probably not worthy of this thread but I'll put them here anyway. I got them a few years ago with my old point and shoot. I set it on firework mode so it would hold the shutter open for like 4 seconds. It took about 100 tries to get these two. haha

I'm getting kinda tired of waiting and am thinking about picking up the X-Pro 1 with the 35mm 1.4. Carrying around the 60D with the 17/55mm gets heavy fast on vacations. I'm looking for something small and easy to carry with great IQ.

    Thanks 6spd!!

    1. What do you mean try focus on her eyes? You mean with the Point of Focus directly on her eyes? I have 7 and I figure since the POF was on her it was good enough  I'll use that advice and see how the pictures turn out. She was suppose to be directly blocking the sun but she moved as I pressed the shutter button and thought it came out a good shot.

    2. I didn't want to get dirty with this shot so I placed the camera near the ground and pray I got the shot. Thought it was pretty cool. I agree with watching my horizons hahah think is cock-eyed!! The RC was suppose to be in focus but the POF wasn't on it :(

    3. Yeah it was definitely a bad day to shoot the windmill. Was at the Tulip Festival here in Oregon and there were a bunch of people around it so I wanted a shot without the folks.

Thanks for the honest critique! Overall, I do feel that I over do it with the colors most of the time when I mess with the 'vibrance' on LightRoom. I typically just mess with the WhiteBalance, Clarity and exposure for post processing but sometimes I want the picture to be vivid without over-doing it

    1. it's the golden rule of thumb when shooting someone's portrait to make sure their eyes are in focus. everything else could be out of focus, nose, ears, cheeks, hair, etc, but the eyes tell the story of the shot

    2. spray and pray is a method that works half the time, at best. it would be privvy of you to think of what you want to take a picture of, make sure it looks good through the viewfinder, compose and shoot. this "train of thought" works well when you are positioned in a spot and shooting moving subjects(like at a racetrack, I guess. but even then, there is a lot of thought going in to those shots for fast motion blur.) your shot there did not require that method, so overall, it is just a shot of nothing.

    3. you can also manually focus to get your subject in focus. just because modern cameras have auto focus, doesnt mean it will be accurate all the time.

    4. maybe the people on the ground could have added to the dynamic of the windmill. the people could have been a measurement of height for the windmill(I've never seen one in person), which goes on to my next point...

I've learned that when you come on to a scene that you want to shoot, don't just shoot what you intend to shoot, shoot more. shoot wide, tight, really tight, and really wide. include/exclude all of the surroundings as well. most of the time, there will be things beyond your control for you to get that shot, and you just have to deal with it or dont take pictures.

if you aren't shooting with your camera, you will not get better at taking pictures(learning your camera's functions, limits, composition, etc). post processing will not fix everything. it is a tool to bring out more of the picture. you cant polish a turd(pardon my harsh words)

x2 on both points, i really learned lesson 3 in switzerland, it was usually raining and we were on a bus most the time so i had to shoot through glass with water on it, i'd have the perfect shot then the autofocus would com on and focus on the raindrops, and my shot would be ruined.

This is the best advice by far.

I am not a photographer by any means..hope be Amateur someday. But I am a good sound guy(live sound/studio recording).

Mic placement is like the same thing. Fractions of inches can mean the difference in sound.

The saying in the audio word is, put shit in, get shit out. No post processing can fix bad mic placement a phase issues as good as just good mic placement.

Same thought process should go into photography I'd say

Nice article 6spd! I don't use my live view finder as often as I'd like. I used to use it here and there with the manual focus when my canon 50mm 1.8 was my go to lens but ever since I picked up the sigma 30mm 1.4 I have stopped, not sure why. I've been trying to use the 'rule of the third' also as much as possible but sometimes I forget and you are right, you cannot polish a turd. Sometimes I find myself saying 'eh I'll crop it out of the picture on lightroom'. I know I've got much to learn and it is always great to get useful advice from the ones who have been doing it longer with more experience. Thanks again 6spd. I'll post up more as summer goes.
