Toyota recommends no syn oil for 4.0?

    been using mobil 1 syn in mine since i bought it. no problems

    It is funny the call out the Tacoma but then on the table state the FJ 4.0 comes with synthetic. I do not see that the mechanics of those two being so different that one comes with it in the motor and one can't have it at all.

    What is even stranger is based on the wording it appears the FJ and 4runner can go 10k between changes.

    Um, yeah. The University of Toyota needs to go back to school. I am pretty sure any combustion engine non 2-stroke (and even some 2t's) can take pretty much any proper weight oil synthetic or not. I run synthetic in all my vehicles, lawn mowers, 4 wheelers, dirt bike, generators, etc.

    That's odd. It does say toyota university but I've never heard "cannot use synthetic..."

    The shop foreman at my regular dealer (Grappone Toyota, Bow NH) believes that Toyota specs non-synthetic oil for the Tacoma 4.0 simply due to inertia. That's what they started with, and they won't change it until the engine design is updated. Unlike some of their other cars (my 2010 Prius was changed from 5k to 10k, for example) they have not made a running change in the Tacoma oil drain interval to account for the greater wear-resistance of quality synthetic oil. I'd guess that this will change when they move to direct injection, but maybe no sooner.

    What does that even mean? I would assume Conv 5-30 and Syn 5-30 would act similar to the effects of inertia..

    just keep your oil changed at the required interval and you will be fine. I use a reputable regular oil. It's what the dinosaurs wanted me to do.

    I've been using full synthetic since it had 3K miles and now I have about 57K miles and running just fine.

    I am referring to inertia on the part of the technical folks at Toyota, not the engine internals. They are not going to spend money to change the oil specification. The engine was designed for conventional 5W-30, and that's what they're going to spec until the engine is redesigned.

    I use Mobil 1 5W-30.

    I would say in the context of his comment he means something more along the lines of "corporate inertia" vs. physical inertia.
