    cut from webpage:

    Toyota began using 0W-20-weight
synthetic oil in certain engines in 2010.
More engines were adapted to use
synthetic oil in 2011, and more have
been added for 2012. In fact, the
only 2012 Toyotas that cannot use
synthetic oil are the Avalon, 3.5-liter
    RAV4, 4.0-liter Tacoma and Yaris.
Everything else uses synthetic, or can

    use synthetic or conventional.

The way I read this it says that it applies to 2012 models that use 0w-20. Everything else can use synthetic.

I've been using conventional Oil for the last 30 years down here in south Texas with no problems. I just use regular 5w30 valvoline dino oil in my Tacoma..........no problems at 125k miles so far. I will let y'll know when I get to 200k miles or 250k miles in my Tacoma using conventional oil. :D

Toyota University? Is that like the Whataburger training place down the road?

More frequent oil change intervals get (some) people into the dealer service department more often, giving them more chances to get you with add ons and other "recommended service". They don't benefit from you running synthetic and having a longer interval.

5w30 is 5w30 people. Syn and conventional have exactly the same lubricity characteristics out of the bottle. This is what GLI and ILSAC are for.

How long they retain those characteristics and under what conditions is what sets them apart. For normal street driving and regular OCIs, its all the same shit.

Wonder why the I4 runs synthetic but retains the 5k mile interval?

This is just a theory as to why the FJ Cruiser & 4Runner both use Synthetic oil vs conventional oil. All three have the same engine code (1GR-FE). Based on the total number of sales for the year 2010 (http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/01/year-end-sales-report-toyota/) the Tacoma sold 106,198 units, and the FJ & 4 Runner combined sold 61,490. With Toyota offering two years scheduled free maintenance on all new models it is much cheaper to only offer conventional oil on the Tacoma due to its nearly 2-1 sales number than to offer free synthetic, which would cost them a lot more money. That's my theory.

Wow. I guess I was wrong to run my '06 up to 103,000 miles on the synthetic crap. Good thing I traded for a 2010. Now I can ruin another Tacoma...

A sound theory. It's all about the bottom line and how much $$ Execs can line their pockets with.

I enjoyed this statement from the pdf:

" Genuine Toyota Motor Oil 0W-20 utilizes a Toyota-specific additive package that will provide the best results for oil performance and fuel economy—it’s what the engine was designed to use. However, other 0W-20 synthetic oils can be used, although they aren’t optimized for Toyota engines."

    Funny shit right there.

+1, my dealer said mine has synthetic and they will not change it until 10k. I am doing my own at 5k.

Take it to the dealer and show them the maintenance schedule. They are required to go by the schedule. 2.7L - 5000 miles or 6 months and Synthetic Oil.

Make them do it just cause they are being a douche!
