A: Have you used this disk drive with this laptop before? I had one (USB SuperDrive that wouldn't work for certain models)
Negative, but note, I am a little confused by your comment. Mine is an internal drive, you reference a usb drive above.

B: can you get the install disk to boot at all?
Yes, but when it is time to install snow leopard, hard drive is not listed. However, I can use the ubcd (live cd) to boot and format the disk--it sees the disk just fine. I've even copied a few files for testing purposes--all successful. To my mind, this indicates the hardware is good.

    C: model hdd?[/QUOTE]
Same as original I believe, but I will have to go back in and check. It has that zif proprietary interface. My options were limited for this reason

Replaced hdd with hdd. That proprietary zif socket really didn't leave me many options.

This may have been already asked, however, at 52 pages I don't feel like spending all day sifting through questions and answers that may not even be here..

2011 mid year edition Macbook Pro, all is well minus the click function on the mouse, lately it has been less responsive for lack of a better word. It takes several tries to click on links, or anything else in general and actually get a result from it. Anyone know why?

Your battery is swelling up or the set screw for the trackpad had loosened up. Try removing the bottom and removing the battery, if the click function is restored then its time to get a new battery.

If the set screw loosened up you just need to slightly tighten it up.

Shouldn't have any issues with that drive. Sounds like to may have an issue with the drive it self or the main logic board is failing.

Hi there, I have a mid 2010 mac book pro and i hear there is a way to add a second hard drive by replacing the optical drive. Is that something you would recomend that I could tackle on my own or should i have someone do it for me? Keep in mind i have never replaced a hard drive on any computer.

I'm also looking at replacing the 2 2 gig sdram with 2 4 gigs...is that pretty easy??

    thanks for the input :pccoffee:

Don't format the disk unless you use Disk utility from the install disk.

I was afraid you would say that. I read about the battery swelling up some. I leave it plugged in half the time so maybe I should ditch the battery altogether and just operate it via cord.

Either way, I'll pull it apart in a little bit and check it out, thanks for the link! I am no stranger to dismantling this thing however, especially after the HD exchange :)

Need to know a little bit to do the optical drive swap. Requires aftermarket hat drive caddy.

Following link for RAM upgrade instructions.

Apple nerds... Don't beat me up for this, but I find it ironic that a Windows based disc (UBCD) can see a drive on a MBA that SL cannot. Linux can as well (gparted live cd). What's up with that? I believe I've answered all the questions...

Shoot, I think the battery is indeed swollen slightly, the mouse seems to be responding to clicks perfectly now that I am running it without a battery.

Have you gone under SL disk utility under the menu bar and partitioned the drive as a Macintosh journaled disk yet? You can not I stall until you do.

Tried, but the disk is not listed for SL install disc. During initial troubleshooting, I formatted as hfs+journaled, single partition via ubcd however. (after a few unsuccessful install attempts, Google said SL may not see raw disks, and gparted live cd said the disk was raw format out of the box).

Never personally had that problem. ou can format it as NTFS or Fat 32 and SL should see the drive. It will not let you install, but then you can use Disk Utility to format as journaled
