I am new to the forum and was noticing people installing catch cans on their trucks. My question is, would it foul any code or anything of the sort if I replaced the PCV with a standard screw in nipple and run a hose to the ground? Obviously I would put a cap on the one on the intake.
I rather do this than spend the $ on a catch can and still possibly have gunk go through my intake.
Also, I know this is done factory on some older tractors I have and on my Kenworth before all this emission crap got big.
(I know a Tacoma is not a tractor or KW, but both are internal combustion engines last time I checked lol)

Any input is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Why spew oil on the road way. Install a catch can.

Unhook the hose from the intake and find out :)

Any codes throw could be cured by reattaching the hose and unhooking the battery for 20 minutes. FWIW, a catch can could be made on the cheap if you're a handy DIYer.

FWIW a road draft tube can result in fouling of your oil if you don't set it up right and/or don't drive at speed enough.

Reading more about crank case ventilation, apparently there are PCV valves with integrated oil screens. I wonder if ours has one already or not? A valve with an integrated screen that drains right back into the crank seems like the ideal setup.

Yes. I've owned several 1950s Chevy and GMC trucks. When GM changed from the road draft tube to a PCV system that uses intake manifold vacuum to purge crankcase contamination, the oil change interval changed from 1000 to 3000 miles. Unless you want to return to 1 month or 1000 mile oil changes, don't screw with it.

For roughly $35 you can buy a CHEAP catch can from ebay and make it work properly and function. Yes a tractor has a combustion engine but not driven on the road or at high speeds. Also most (except brand new ones) don't have emission systems. In my opinion if your going to fuck with the PCV system do it properly, instead of dumping your blow by oil on the ground, which will probably just spray to the underside of your truck anyway.

I bought a small cheap black catch can off ebay for $25 and with another $10 got it to function properly.

    1) $25 catch can
    2) tube of blue RTV to seal the can
    3) 7ft 3/8 fuel hose from Lowes
    4) 4in sq. piece of tin from duct work
    5) JB weld
    6) 4 hose clamps
    7) 1 bolt I had to mount the bracket to threaded holes on the drivers side fender well.

It's 100% functional and no engine codes, every 2000-3000 miles I drain it and have enough to overfill a small plastic dixi cup.
