Toyota recommends no syn oil for 4.0?

The synthetic oil thy are talking about is the 0w20. Our trucks are not approved by Toyota to run that super ow viscosity oil.

You can run either conventional or synthetic oil oil in a Tacoma, just follow the recommended viscosity and grade on the oil filler cap or what is published in your owners manual and change it at the recommended interval.

I have the 4.0. I plan to talk with them when I take it in for the 5k maint..

Agreed, I was told to bring it in at 5,000 miles. I would go back to that dealer or you can always take to another Toyota dealer.

While the longevity of synthetic oil is without question better then conventional, my thought process behind syn and regular oil is that both the engine running regular and syn. Oil in it, both are having fuel injected into the engine. The same fuel is being injected into the combustion chambers which has piston rings. Those piston rings are not fully sealing at all times and since some fuel is wasted during the combustion process, it has nowhere to escape but into either out to the exhaust or into the oil pan. I'm sure everyone knows that fuel is an excellent fuel cutting agent, and after 3,000 miles what do you think that oil is going to have in it? And plenty of it as well. After 3,000 miles the oil is going to have lost it's protection. And you guys really want to wait until 10,000 miles to replace it? Do you really think the manufacturer wants longevity of the engine for the consumer??

 

I called the service dept.. He said every 5k on Tacoma. Sales dude was confused. Surprised?

 

If you run Synthetic in your Tacoma and drive to 88MPH you will go "back to the future".

Dipshit, why are you putting synthetic in then? Synthetic was designed to last between 10-15k between oil changes. If Mercedes can wait 10k for an oil change I'm 100% positive your 4.0l can wait. Unless you like wasting money.

 

If you like driving around with fuel contaminated oil in your engine then by all means waiting til 10-15k is a brilliant idea!

 

dealer was wrong for one thing. Number is I use to always change at first 1000 then go to every 3 or 5. This was on conventional which as it turns out is what is in my 2013

 

Maybe you should specify that in your postas this is a synthetic oil thread, which would lead us to assume you are talking about synthetic oil.

 

I thought that I had syn. The sales manager told me when I picked up the truck that it had syn.. I even looked at him surprised and asked again. He said yes syn.. Because of this thread I decided to call.

 

My 2012 V6 uses conventional and dealer change it for free at 4900, 9400, and will do it again at 14000 miles.

After 5 free oil changes I will do it myself using Mobil1 5W-30 Syn. I used that in my 2002 4Runner V6 for 9 years with 75k miles without any issues.

 

I put synthetic in my truck and it pooped out a Chevy Colorado.

 

Still curious about this - what is it about the 2.7L 4 that requires a change with synthetic oil at 5k when all the others using synthetic are 10k?
