Does this count? I'm gathering ideas for something more expedition style, maybe a tube flatbed with lots of storage type of thing. Dunno yet, but this sucks for camping/hunting/fishing type stuff.

i'm in the same situation as you, but with the order of events reversed. have the bed rack and storage, but am now trying to figure out how to build my bed cage. funny, i had arrived at the same solution of a tubed flatbed.

Yeah I don't want to give up roll over protection, but need more space. Plus, since running hummer tires I haven't had a single flat so dual spares is kind of pointless. I'm thinking of something like this, minus the exo cage.

right on. i'm thinking about something similar to all pro's truck (like you, no exocage on the front end). i like having the tube and removable filler plates. colormatching is just a bonus.

if i build something like this, integrating shock towers and a bed rack is very easy. they just chose a poor place for the spare. talk about space consuming.

That sunufagun stole my idea of running the cage down into the fenders! Is there more info on that truck?

Yeah figuring out what to do with the spare will be the pita. I'm thinking some sort of flip down carrier over the "tailgate" area, and make it so I can use it as a ramp to load a dirtbike too...Might be too much leverage to lift the tire at that length too though...

a pivot is a solid option. you could compliment it with some gas struts if it's too heavy.

my spare pivots, but it goes up, not down. it's a very manageable weight, but it's a much lighter tire than what you're running. i'm using 3'' poly bushings for the pivot, so a similar design would definitely support loading a bike or quad.

unfortunately the only picture of it flipped up is from about a year and a half ago, during a week long power outage in 100+ degree temps......had to cool off somehow.

I revised it after these shots were taken. I swapped the aluminum slats on top for composite decking. The aluminum was then used on another TW members rack.

Inno cross bars with the Tacoma Inno mounts. They attach into the bed brackets with no tools needed. Bolts have handles that make them easy to take on/off.
Basket is a cheaper Curt model. I plan to get a thicker one when I get my next setup to put on the roof.

There are some sweet setups here! :headbang: I've been thinking of making one, so I can carry a canoe up there... :) But still have soft topper integrated with it... :)
