To further help with your point. When I had a turbo eclipse I would run pretty rich for the higher boost I ran. When I would change the oil about 2.5k miles or so it would smell like gas. I try not to let my regular vehicles go more than 4k miles between.

    this made me smile

Never, EVER, trust a sasales guy to give you correct information on a vehicle. EVER!;)

O and the myth that you can't switch from conventional to synthetic is exactly that, a myth.

75k is not a test in my book. I put Castrol 5-30 conv. in my 2009 and went 88k but would not say that proved anything.

Your rings must have been pretty bad for this to be happening. And German cars seem to have no issue going 10k between services. Why exactly can't the japs? My truck goes 12k between girl change, full synthetic, no issues at 170k.

A lot of you are missing the point here. They are talking about the 0W20 oil the dealers use. I use that stuff in my wife's Venza and it's like pouring a glass of water. I wouldn't want to use it in my truck for sure. I use Lubro Moly synthetic in mine and change it every 7500 miles. Sometimes 10k miles if it's winter and I don't feel like changing it. I've been using this oil and those mileage intervals on my Tacomas and BMW's for about a decade now with no issues. I'm all for preventative maintenance but the only thing I change the oil on every 3k miles is my old 84 5.0 Capri with a carb on it. A modern vehicle doesn't need oil changes anywhere near as frequently as the general public believes.

I'll always use synthetic in my Tacoma. However I just traded a 96 I bought last fall from the original owner's mechanic. I bought it with 250k miles on it and it got oil changes every 7500-12k miles with conventional oil since day one. Guy took decent care of it but wasn't too picky about oil change intervals and always used the cheap oil. It ran perfect and I did valve cover gaskets on it last fall and the inside of the motor was incredibly clean. I put the Lubro Moly 5W40 in it after I changed the gaskets and never changed it again. I just traded it with 260k on it and the oil was clean, and it hadn't burned any either. People who do 3k mile oil changes on modern engines are wasting money. My father insists on me changing the oil on his 02 tacoma and 02 rav4 every 3k miles and he uses the cheap stuff. A few times I've dumped it into clean drain pans and put it right in my plow truck. It's always clean. I haven't changed the oil with fresh oil in that thing for probably a decade. 22RE with 200k on it. Runs great.

Have you ever had a turbo you ran at high boost?

Meh, when I had an Eclipse, the oil would smell like gas too. Not because it ran high boost, but because it was a piece of shit.

Funny to me I was always thinking the tundra 4.0 (1GR-FE) & the taco 4.0 (1GR-FE) was the same engine.. They say the 4.0 taco takes conventional & the 4.0 tundra takes synthetic :goingcrazy::goingcrazy:...I only use 10w30 synthetic in our 4.0 and have for the last 35k miles, runs like a top no valve tic & no more oil burning.:D:cool:

My BMW was spec'd for 15000km between oil changes. However it took 7.5L of oil. So... given the amount of contamination that happens in half the mileage with 4 L in a standard oilpan - my German vehicle still had the same % contamination in double the mileage with about double the oil.

Pulling the dipstick, you can get an idea of how clean your oil is, and go from there. I'd stick to a the dealer recommended 10000km service interval or less.

2006 Tacoma just turned 125,000 has had Mobil 1 since first oil change and every 5,000 miles since faithfully. Still runs like new. Maintenance is the key.

My Tacoma has been serviced at a Tacoma dealer since I bought it, they are using Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic without issue, however they will not use 0W20 synthetic.

OK, well read the whole thread and then stumbled downstairs to the garage and dug out the owners manual on my brand new 2013 DC/SB 4.0L. v6 (1GR-FE) engine.

    Page 455
    Engine Oil Selection
"Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" is used in your Toyota vehicle. Use Toyota Approved "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity.

    Page 456
    "SAE 5W-30"

"SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If 5W-30 is not available, SAE 10W-30 may be used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change.

The Toyota Warranty and Maintenance Guide states on page 38.
Replace engine oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

I don't know if this helps or not it is just what the owners manual says and the maintenance guide states. Slippery topic for sure.:D

My question is what is Toyota genuine motor oil and who makes it for Toyota?

They use 50/50(conventional/synthetic). I wouldn't believe a random site. Nothing is going to happen if you're going to use straight synthetic. Don't believe everything you read OP.

I think they mean they do not use 0W20 Synthetic. 0W20 is the only Synthetic they use. Use 5W30 Synthetic and you will see no problem.
