huh, more rumors from here I guess.... They are still dominating the mid-size class though.

That's not saying much for one there are more model cars produced than trucks. Second looking at those same figures, there is a huge gap between the F-150, Silverado and Ram and the other trucks; meaning the mid size truck market is negligible.

That's the misconception of many here on TW. We love our trucks, but were a small group overall. Add up all the mid size player and the tundra and we still don't compete with the F-150.

Which is why there's no rush for a redesign. The only midsize competition is the Frontier and they only move 1/4 the units that Toyota moves. It's why you don't see any Tacoma commercials and there's no rush to freshen the model up.

Conversely, this is why you DO see Tundra commercials, and gimmicks like it towing the Space Shuttle. Toyota is chasing the full size market and the new Tundra is a reflection of that.

There aren't any misconceptions here though ... Most on TW know where Toyota stands. They lead sedans, they dominate the midsize truck market, and they're chasing the fullsize market.

But the F-150 is a full size. It's in the same class as the Tundra.

Personally I don't think Toyota considers the frontier competition these days based on numbers sold, but yes, that's why Toyota really doesn't need to redesign the Tacoma. The profit is and will always be in the full size truck market. The big 3 makes $5K-$10K profit for everyone they sell even with the rebates on them.....

The only way the Tacoma gets a full redesign is if the 2015 Colorado is a decent platform that offers buyers a better choice.

The original point made by Brady that you contested was that more people buy sedans than trucks. The data supports that point.

You need to stop comparing the Tacoma to the F150's of the market; the Tacoma isn't designed or marketed to compete in the fullsize market so you're comparing apples to oranges.

You're missing the point of our conversation...no matter how much cliff dwelling we here at TW do about the need for more mid size truck options, the bean counters at the Big 3 are right, the market is all about full size. The mid size market is non existent. In regards to the Tundra which I added in just to show the parity in sales Toyota only has 5% of the market. That's how ford can refresh their auto portfolio more often due to the profit from their truck and suv lineup

No it doesn't. He said more people buy cars because they don't need a truck, but if you look at the top 2 swelling trucks they outsell the next top 3 selling cars. You brought up the top 10 selling trucks. Its the top selling trucks, the rest are negligible since there are more car models. Do the math, the full size outsells the top 3 model cars if you exclude suvs

Where am I comparing the two other than sales. Brady said the Tacoma outsold the Silverado or the Sierra. All I did was highlight that the Tacoma doesn't outsell any of the big 3 full size.

Lol dude. If you're going to going to say trucks outsell cars you can't take 2 trucks versus 4 cars, particularly when there are far more options in the sedan market which dilutes figures at the top of the market. The top six sedans have all sold 100,000+ models this year; only the top theee trucks have broken 100K.

Top 10 sedans vs. top 10 trucks, sedans win.

I think were splitting hairs at this point. I concede if you want to line up 10 model cars vs 10 medel trucks; however any rationale person can see that there aren't 10 different lines of trucks to compare. If we look at the top 5 cars the numbers favor trucks.

Well you learn something new every day I guess. haha

And yeah the mid-size is non-existent... Ford dropped the rangers in the US and Toyota is going to drop the FJ and the 4runner in coming years (although they aren't pickups I believe it is foreshadowing really), I imagine other companies will start dropping their mid-sized trucks as well due to lack of sales and the EPA restrictions getting tighter and tighter...

I missed this originally, I can't keep up the 2 conversation on my tablet. Anyways it was Brady who said the Tacoma was a hot seller which started this whole OT fiasco, to which I highlighted that the Tacoma is not a hot seller overall or for Toyota; hence my comment.

The sedan market outsells all of the truck market. It's just the way it is. The top of the truck market may be dominated by only a few models, but that doesn't mean it's a better selling market segment.

81K models so far this year ... That's $1.6 billion in revenue even if every single model had a $20K invoice. It's a hot seller for the market it's designed for. If it wasn't a hot seller you wouldn't see them everywhere.

Jax you need to pick your argument are we comparing the top selling car vs the top selling truck or 5 on 5? Lets agree on one thing, there are more cars built than trucks right? If we look at the top 5 cars trucks dominate. The F150 has been the number 1 selling vehicle in America for 37 years period. Theres no disputing that. The original discussion started when Brady said cars way outsold trucks.....to which is asked what about the F150 and Silverado...food for thought that was all. The intent was just to show the volume numbers of the top 3, not to dispute more trucks are on the road as awhile than cars, because that foolish. I'm done arguing over semantics. You can twist the stats in any way.....let's just agree that the full size market is a heavy player and sells boatload and the mid size market is neglible/non existent with exception to the Tacoma. Let us also agree that in the overall sale of cars the Tacoma is negligible too...not focusing only on the mid size. If we were focusing on niche markets than we could say the 4. Runner sells a lot since its one of the only truck based subs available today....let's not go there

Ok, I'm seeing all sorts of results here but looks like I was basically right with my first statement. I never meant 1 individal model of a car outsold a specific model of truck. I meant in total (counting all models in one large group), more cars are sold every year than trucks.
