What about a small diesel generator that powers direct drive electric motors at the wheels? Would allow for a small engine with little emissions and no need for a massive battery that's more environmentally harmful than people are willing to admit.
Braking and cornering would be improved with independent electric motors at the wheels as well.
Seems like an option? Not sure

 

Many people thought that would be the Chevy Volt, but GM couldn't pull it off. It still makes sense to use a battery.

Jeep built a concept vehicle with the four motors. I think the generator was powered by gas. I think the big deal is weight and $$$. All that stuff adds a lot of mass to the vehicle and relieves a bunch of mass from your bank account..

 

Or a vehicle that uses diesel power on one axle and a KERS electrical drive on the other axle

At least one insurmountable problem was that the generator has to be very large to propel the vehicle at typical USA highway speeds. GM resorted to direct propulsion by the gasoline engine. Generator efficiency isn't high enough to do it with electricity.

Unfortunately, not much room for passengers or cargo in a dual-engine vehicle. I've seen a Honda Civic with a gas engine and automatic transaxle at each end. Very cool, but no room for a gym bag.

I was just working on a British navy destroyer that uses a gas turbine to generate electricity and then it goes to an electric motor that turns the screws.
They call it Integrated Electric Propulsion or IEP.

I am sure that is slated for the 2015 Tacoma. VW will merge with Toyota within the next year and powerplant sharing among all platforms will occur.
