$26k for a first vehicle could get you a Camry hybrid or a 4L Tacoma 4wd.The 2 aren't comparable directly, but hybrids bought right are very worth the money. 46 in town 38 hiway for the Camry hybrid for example.

Battery: slow charge, 10 yr life span or so, no they aren't costly as many would believe in the long run. Fast charge though and they last 5 years, something to think about.

In the end you don't 4 wheel the camry and don't get 39mpg in the Tacoma , so buy to suit your needs.

Now when VW gets the GTD golf stateside, that diesel will give me a boner.

    Yeah pretty much.

Even if you were considering a truck in the same price point as a new prius

if you drove 20,000 miles a year, which is a fair amount... at 4.00/gal and 55mpg that's 1455$ in fuel a year

Now lets say you drive a tacoma, which costs the same, and it nets 18mpg, that's $4450 a year in fuel.

3k/year isn't worth it to me... sure it'd be nice to pocket all that, but yeah doesn't quite suit me. I'm not saying the Prius is worthless just that for me it wouldn't be the right decision.

I'd rather purchase a TDI golf or jetta, which I test drove and loved.

    Just saying...

oh and as far as cost of ownership of the vehicle, I didn't mean batteries or maintenance or such. More meant cost of vehicle, cost of insurance, and cost of registration -- which here varies greatly by the value of your vehicle. I can tell you that truck would be a whole lot cheaper to own even if it gets 30 less MPG (remember that price difference would take about 7 years of 20,000 miles a year at 4.00 gas to break even). But then again we can't do everything by financial sense, or we'd all be driving cheap econo shit boxes.

Sorry... I know I kind of rambled.

I guess in summation, 55mpg sounds fucking sweet but when I think about it, with a new vehicle it's not that much of a difference in fuel per year, 3k at the extreme end, IMO, and with an old vehicle it doesn't really make sense at all. There are many better options if you were really buying with the intention of saving money.

If VW sold the Amarok here, Toyota would have to step up their game.

I have a regular Camry that gets 35/36 freeway, 20 in town. I'm in the same math you have, I just don't see the need to sell it for the new hybrid and have a car loan. What might surprise you is that that cost of ownership is about the same, or less with the hybrids..... based on just driving, not adding TW effect of mods. of course the web tools ofr the estimates aren't spot on , but seem reasonable close.

    That is interesting...

I guess I may be missing a tax credit too to be fair but I don't know too much about that.

Anyhow... yeah I just don't see where a new vehicle to save money makes sense in most cases. I guess you neither! :D

I want that Amorak too. I think EPA/emissions is the main reason we cannot have things like that.

as far as Tax credits go MAX, I don't really know enough on them, I do know some areas give credits fed and state , and take away for gas tax /road repair.
