Plate rear hitch bumper interest thread

Here it is boys! The tire carrier. This was a quick mock up. It will have a latch on the left end, 1000 lb spindle hinge on the right. Will fit a 35" tire or bigger if you're a badass. I'm a little concerned about covering up the taillights.

 

What if you located the left side latch no further out to the left than the left side of the tire is. That would make the arc smaller and maybe less annoying to swing out when needed. To follow the closer to the passenger side theme offset the whole unit to the right. This might combat the infamous Tacoma lean, make for a smaller swing out arc, slightly less material usage, less cantilevered weight on your hinge and give better visibility in the rear view mirror.

I like where you're going, but the main issue is the tailgate would hit the bumper if there was any sort of raised latch or bracket on the bumper between the raised ends. Maybe if I do a drop-in hinge pin so there's just a hole you drop the pin into on the top of the bumper. Hmmm...

 

That second design rear bumper looks good , and the price is good also

I have some other ideas I might hire you to make if you're interested. Also if you want help, I'm not around much on weekends but weeknights I don't have much to do and am usually bored. I'd be happy to drive over and help if you need it, or just hang out. I'm here through the fall semester.

sorry... wasn't on to defend my previous post but yes.. just the outside edges but I am totally in love with the second bumper!!!! that looks great!

 

Here's the design that xcmtb83 headed toward. It would use a spring pin on the left directly into the bumper. Simpler and could be done for $275 probably.

Here's a little tube bumper I tossed together. I'm not sure if my tube bender can even create this tight of a bend though. It would be 1.75" x 0.12" wall thickness.

I don't particularly like tube bumpers so any thoughts would be helpful.

 

And here's the 2nd plate bumper style. 0.25" thick tube.

 

What bender are you using? Mine bends a complet circle lol basically in casing the tube around the die 360* & ill let you stick to the plate bumper and ill make a rear tube one got a pretty slick design in mine for rear hybrid tube bumper with swingout that will replace tailgate and make a new one as part of the swingout.. Optional I guess but mine will be that way!

I agree with most on the bulky ness of your rear bumper but the design itself looks great! And I understand the step thing but hell I use my kickouts for steps into the bed so it wasn't an issue with me, my plate bumper sticks out past my tailgate maybe 1/2" or so.. But I used a piece of 3/8 C channel and tube wrap arounds as I'm sure you've seen!

Interested in seeing the final good luck of new bumper and swingout!

 

I really like the 2nd plate bumper design! At the license plate, will it run strait across or will there be an indention for the LP to fit into? Either way, I like the slim look. Great job

It will have a hinged license plate bracket that flips up for access to the hitch.

I'm in Iowa. Shipping would probably around $150 for the plate bumper, less for either of the other 2 bumpers since they are lighter.
