Have had my truck nearly two months now. Figured mileage the old fashioned way at 20.25mpg over the first few tanks.

Found a local station that sells 91 octane ethanol free at $4.20/gallon. Blended my first fill with about 1/4 tank of regular unleaded 87 octane. Didn't notice much of a difference. Am using a scangauge II to monitor consumption. Added second fill up on the 91 octane w/o ethanol yesterday. Came to my camp today and in 106 miles, according the the scangauge it showed 25.9mpg. Drove like a granny, but hey...I'll take it.

I never would have guessed such a difference. Will confirm after another fill up. This was driving on rural roads with good sized hills to boot. I would watch the mpg decrease as I went uphill and then it would climb right back up on the downhill side by coasting. On a couple of short rides this evening it was showing 22+. I'm stoked :D

Is anyone else having similar results with a 4.0 on ethanol free?

I have 2 Shell stations close that sell 93 octane non ethanol fuel and I use them exclusively. I average between 22-24 mpg depending on how much city driving I have to do. I will go out of my way to use Shell V-Power even when on vacation. After watching the test run on "Fifth Gear" I'm sold.

I also noticed a jump in mpg when I switched from 87 to 91. It's still brand new so I wasn't sure if the increase was due to the break in period (5,000 miles now) or if its due to the 91 octane. Where can you find out if its ethanol free or not? Dang, 25 seems too good to be true!

Sounds good. However, you don't mention whether the scangauge numbers correlate with your old-fashioned calculations. Have you verified the gauge readings? I'm not challenging you--I just wonder about the accuracy of scangauges and other ways of electronically measuring the gas mileage.

Awesome, I get the same I just did a trip total of 500 miles. Scangauge E showed 26.2 MPG. Old school calculation was very close calculated 26.4. This is s S/C truck with 5000 miles on it. I run the highest octane I can find and run Lucas fuel additive. The speed consisted of an average of 65 MPH.

It's a 4 x 4. Should also say that it has a hard shell Leer bed cover, FWIW.

I did use the scangauge on several 87 octane fills before starting with the 91 ethanol free fuel. It showed considerably less mpg and was consistent with my earlier numbers. I will do a test by math on the next couple of tanks to further confirm.

I did a 1200 mile trip to Maine and back this summer and ran 87 up and 91+ back. When I drove* I was seeing about 20-30 miles more per tank with higher octane.

We have ethanol free marine gas in my town, but its pricey.

*wife drive too and she tears the sh!t out of the economy so that don't count

I have a scangauge have have seen it hit 26mpg or so on commutes to work. I find using fuelly to track and prove mpgs better in the long run. I installed a pro afe in the truck and have seen improvements in my tank. Before I hit 21s and 22s. Now 23s and 24s are the norm.

I would dig getting some extra mpgs out of the truck with different octanes. I have been running regular since day one.

I also think it would be nice if the scangauge could do mpgs for the full tank. Not just the current drive.

Mine has 123k on it and I'm averaging between 21.5 and 22 on regular. But most of my driving is highway and I still have stock 245's on it. I suspect it will drop a little when I go to more aggressive 265/70/16 tire but hopefully not much. I do a LOT of driving. 46 miles one way to work. My last truck was pretty much identical and bone stock but it was a TRD off road package truck. I saw 20 out of it once. But it had been pretty hammered before I got it.
