How To: Black Head Light mod

Are you talking about the bolt that holds a hooked bolt hole that sits towards the midline of the truck? If it's like the 05 thru 11's, just use a 10mm open ended wrench and slide it between the bumper cover and loosen it, then rotate the hooked part out.

If you are talking about the dreaded fourth bolt that you can't even see, use a ratchet or ratcheting wrench and you'll have to do it by feel. Reach up there, it really is a bitch. There are two 10mm bolts there. One holds the light to the fender support. The other bolts the fender to the support. I don't remember if it's the top or bottom, sorry. If you have an inspection mirror that may work, but I did it by feeling for the bolt head and fitting the socket on top of it.

 

Yup.
10mm 1/4" drive or ratcheting box wrench... a 3/8 ratchet and socket won't fit up there.

 

I have a question, if I loss those trox screw, anyone know the size and where I can get those?

 

PM me your address, I have a junk set of headlights in my garage and can send you one of the screws. I dropped a piece of firewood on the back of the housing so it's trashed. Either that or, I work in Cambridge, if you're ever in that area, I can meet you.

Worst case, take one of the others out and head to a hardware store. You probably wouldn't be able to find a torx head bolt, but you could get a self tapper with the same threads and length at a hardware store.

 

Do that or take it to Home Despot..they've helped me more than once with oddball stuff.

I see people blacking out the headlight reflector when putting in projectors, but what is the advantage of blacking out the turn signal/parking reflectors? Doesn't this significantly reduce the output from these bulbs?

I've replaced my turn signal ones with LED, so the reflectors don't get much use anyway, but was thinking of going back to bulbs, because the LEDs are washed out in the daytime.

 

Yes, it does.
The projector doesn't use the reflector bowl, but IMHO, blacking out the turn signal reflectors is asking for a ticket.

 

Ok, thanks, I think I'll just black out the bezel, and leave it at that.

 

Well crap I broke one of clips that holds the metal bracket to clamp the headlight in. Hoping super glue will fix this.

 

Should I leave the dtrl covers on or off

 

Up to you.
You'll never have to worry about them burning, and you should be running an amber lamp anyways. Just don't paint the reflector.

 

JB Weld. Super glue won't hold up to the vibration on the road.

 

Agreed, superglue has like zero shear force. JB Weld will work better.

 

Well, although I didn't use this thread to black out my bezel (bought the already blacked out Depo), I did use the techniques to install projectors. Overall, the process went as described. I would have to say I was most worried about getting the housings apart, when it came down to it, it was harder getting them back together, especially with the Window Weld seal.

300 deg for 10 min (oven off) was perfect for me.

I also sealed the outside of the seam with GE Silicone II clear sealant, to hopefully keep these moisture free.

 

Well I did it. I pre baked too before putting them bacm together. Only issue I had was I broke a small part of the inside bowl. But I had my fiance and her dad both come out and look and they didn't see anything. So it will go for a while until I order new ones

i see alot of people with the white side reflector, where do you get those from? looks better imo
