I regretted not getting 4x4 in my last truck, I had some pretty serious 4x4 envy. I am also pretty good at getting 2 wheel drive trucks stuck, so this time around I went no regrets

Is this stupid thread still kicking around?

Look, the final answer is that no one "needs" 4WD. We're not talking food, oxygen, shelter here. But for many people it's more convenient to have 4WD than to have 2WD.

Many folks drive in the snow with 2WD and it's OK.

Many folks drive in mountains with 2WD and manage fine.

But if you drive frequently in snowy mountains, it's definitely MORE CONVENIENT to have 4WD.

If you pull heavy boats out of saltwater boatramps with a large tidal range, it's MORE CONVENIENT to have 4WD.

If you like off road with certain trails that your own personal driving capability would find difficult with 2WD, or you'd get more wheelspin causing more erosion than you'd prefer to leave behind, it's MORE CONVENIENT to have 4WD.

I know one particular guy who finds it MORE CONVENIENT to have a 4WD because his steep dirt driveway becomes impassable to 2WD vehicles whenever it rains. Yes, he could have it paved. It's cheaper to drive a 4WD truck, though.

Why can't we discuss this without measuring the length of each others dicks?

Hmm, I commented in this thread 3 years ago, but i'll update my opinion:

I'm on my third Tacoma now and despite really, really wanting a 4x4, I've never been in a situation where i've needed one (well, once). So, I regret it from the standpoint of wanting, but not from the standpoint of needing.

I feel the same, I would like having the 4x4 but in all honesty I have never once NEEDED it so for the time being there is no point in getting it. If I lived in the mountains & got a lot of snow & ice I would change my mind. In Delaware it's relatively flat & the snow we have got since I've been here has been no issue for me. With that said, if I move to an area that makes it worth having I will get one.

I am one of the few guys who ... regrets buying a 4x4 ... and not buying my usual 4x2 Prerunner ... :anonymous:

But I have no snow here and do no off roading either ... so someone will get a super-cherry 4x4 when I sell or trade this time ... :D

no regrets. I wanted it for towing & hauling and I got a great deal and have a 4x4 grand Cherokee so it wasn't worth it to me for the 1 extra option that I won't use anyway.
Top Gear has already proven that you don't need 4 wheel drive as much as you think you do. :D

The word "Prerunner" is the reason I got a 4x4. What does that word mean anyway? It means, When I grow up I want to be a 4x4!!

When going to beaches that allow 4x4's it's nice not having to rent one. Just load up your beach gear and drive out on the sand.

Also nice for driving out on the sand in Assateague Island Ocean City MD. to see the wild ponies.

Another reason I have owned 4x4's in the last several years, the Doc says not to exert the ticker.Several years ago we had a huge storm and at that time I had a Silverado which plowed threw the snow like a knife cutting through butter, even after the plow piled it up at the end of the drive.

I had two wheel drives for many years and got by, but just knowing the 4whl is there when you need it gives me a little piece of mind.

I haven't had the opportunity to try out the Tacoma in the snow yet, but if it works as well I will be happy.

    this and that...
just cause you dont NEED it doesnt mean you wont ever use it. another plus is the resale value vs a 2wd of the same truck.

doesnt mean i dont like me some 2wd toys. xrunner, srunner, dropped 5 luggers is where its at for 2wd.

    A few
I felt that way for a little time, then took my prerunner and discovered that if you go fast on the mucky trails here in FL you really don't need 4x4 and can have helluva a good time. Just get good traction tires and be ready for some air. :)
