I am considering having the automatic transmission on a 2002 Tacoma V6 flushed and then have one of the BG additives put in with the new fluid. The transmission has 200, 000 miles on it and does not have a problem. I am looking for feedback on having this performed. If anyone has had this performed before or if there are reasons not to do this I would appreciate hearing from you.

    Thanks,
    Mitchell

IMO if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I wouldn't add any additives to a properly working tranny, just do the fluid change and call it a day. Is your 1-2 shift a little harsh? I'm wondering if that is the first thing to go on these trannys. I have 200K myself and IMO my 1-2 shift could be better- in 4wd low its really bad.

Thanks for the reply. The transmission shifts fine. The reason for the post was to help me make a decision on the service I wrote about. I am preparing to tow a VW Beetle from Houston to Arkansas for a show in Eureka Springs and wanted to put some clean fluid in the transmission. I am fairly certain the fluid was changed around 90,000 miles. I just replaced the timing belt, tensioners, idlers, water pump and hoses. Just not wanting to have any issues on the trip.

I also had a Toyota Technician say he would not perform a flush, just drain and replace.

    Thanks,
    Mitchell

Some of this Some of that
What is the color of the fluid? Could be harmful to flush it and maybe your better off with a drain and fill. Has the transmission ever been service before? And at what milage?

Don't flush, just drain a fill.

Thanks for all the replies. I have decided to drain and replace versus flushing. One transmission shop says flush, the other one says drain and refill. I will take the safe path and perform the drain and refill a few times over the next year. After that I will add the BG transmission additive.

    Thanks,
    Mitchell

Mine is slipping just a little after my first morning shift when it is cold. I reverse out of my parking spot then I put it into drive and the first few seconds it wants to fly up in the RPM w/o going up in speed and then it starts catching in a few seconds and runs normal all the rest of the time. I usually warm up until it is running at normal temp and idling at 800odd RPMs. You experiencing same thing?

I don't have that problem- except a few times when the battery was really really low- it was really weird, the truck would start but there is something electronically controlled with the tranny that didn't do its function, I'm thinking a solenoid or something, and the tranny would feel like its in N when in drive and would slowly start to function as normal. New battery and that issue didn't pop up again. If anything after a cold start the RPMs are so high, if I go into drive its pretty harsh how bad it just wants to get going right out of idle-- it won't shift to second, third etc when cold though, it will hold that/1st gear until it warms up some.

if the fluid doesn't smell burnt and there's no shifting problems then I'd do the BG flush, very good and safe for the transmission. You WILL not get the same results just adding the BG additive without doing their total flush. if I'm not mistaken the flush is a 3 part BG product flush. First part rids all old fluid and suspended debris, second part conditions all the seals,,, good stuff.

Just do a drain and fill, about 4qts of Toyota type 4. Then do it again a month or so later and your golden for another 100k.

This is normal until the trans fluid reaches operating temp. Takes it a bit longer.

I run lubegard, my transmission runs like butter. Nice smooth crisp shifts...
