If it's for your kid, I would imagine that fuel economy would be important such that gas money doesn't hurt so bad. Maybe a Subaru Outback, Rav4, Honda CRV from late 90s or early 2000s would make more sense.

Otherwise the best choice would be a 1st gen Regular cab Taco.

Well to be honest, fwd w/ chains, or rwd w/ chains and a few bags of concrete should be fine. he'll be dealing with ice more than anything else. If he ends up in a situation where a few feet of snow get dropped, no 4wd would be able to do anything unless you have giant 38+ sized tires on there or a snow mobile.

    just sayin'

This is true but if he starts to get into wheeling which there are plenty of spots in Utah then he will want to have 4wd.

We should probably wait for the OP to reply before making guesses on what his son is going to be doing. However, inferring from the 5k budget, I am going to safely assume that wheeling will not be on the agenda.

Otherwise he better be willing to pay another 5k for bent tie rods, control arms, other suspension linkage, new shocks, a locker, recovery gear, etc over the course of the first semester.

It is likely to be a safety issue more than an entertainment one. Afterall, his son is supposed to be going to school to learn, not to party or wheel.

    ;)

    I would look for a 1994/5Toyota Tacoma Extracab in 4 x 4.
Might be hard to find one under 150,000mi but even at that they will have lots of fun miles left. I sold a friend of mine my 94' almost six years ago now and it's still running around town trouble free and looking good. SO it can be done and your price will be under $5k

Best of luck finding what you want.

Let us know what it ends up being

This truck actually wasn't for my son. They bought the truck I listed ('89 Pickup w/ 115K miles) in my original post yesterday against my recommendation. I was not a proponent of the OP truck because for $5K, they could have done better. But to each their own and as always, I appreciate the feedback!

Now to make sure he doesn't think he's good to go crazy off-roading :)

Well if it was an 89 Toyota Pickup with a 22RE, at least they're easy to maintain and the parts are cheap. (though 5k is a lot for that year and miles, should be more like 2k max)

But still if he wants to go wheeling, the kid will need to spend more time wrenching than driving and learning.
