I looked all over the forum and checked out 11 pages of threads and cannot get a concrete answer on regearing my 2006 Tacoma 2wd 2.7L auto access cab. I know i have 3.58 gears and want to upgrade to 4.10. But do the 4.0L V6 have the same rear end. A local wrecker has about 7 newer tacomas and I need to know what I am looking for and what truck I should inquire about. I would buy the whole pumpkin which would be the easiest bet. help!

I am 90% sure they are the same rear end. the only way you get a different bolt pattern is if it has a electronic locker.

and it is a 8.4 inch ring gear...

2006+ has 2 different carriers, 8" and 8.4". as I understand it, the 8.4 is on the TRD sport. I don't want to commit to saying you have the 8" though. Keep in mind if you get the right size its a carrier swap, all good. If you try the whole axle, your 2wd is spring under, ours are spring over. Sorry I couldn't nail it more for you.

    sounds right on the lugs.

It got so strange I had a reputable shop do my gear swap to 4.56. They got delayed getting the wrong parts sent....or did they order wrong. Guaranteed for a year so its all good.

    For OP http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/64621-rear-locker-swap-trd-non-trd-prerunner-2.html

looks like 7.5" is likely. see the 28th post.

7.5 inch ring gear is a IFS gear. i think you need 8.4 inch gears...

i thought you were OP... 7.5 is the front IFS gear for a 4wd truck. 8.4 inch is for the year of OPs truck final answer lol

OP you need a 8.4 inch ring gear

All the trucks have an 8.4" rear end unless they have the E locker 3rd, which is an 8". You will know if it has the e locker actuator because it will be on the front side of the 3rd member. Clarify it?

second, do you have a 2.7 pre runner or base? (dont know what power plant options go with what on 2nd gens, but it doesen't matter)

why do you want to regear? For the price of regearing (its not cheap at all) it does not seem worth it to just go to factory 4.10s. Might as well go 4.56 if you want to get bigger tires.

Not sure if this direction is helping or hurting, the post has him saying 5 lugs are 7.5"...... honestly I'm looking for a solid answer.

I answered this question in my above post with the pictures. If you don't have a locker you can swap just the 3rd members. Because every other tacoma that is 6lug all have the 8.4" rear end.

Trd offroad= 8" axle. You can't swap anything if you have this axle.
Trd Sport/Non TRD all have a 8.4" axle whether you have a lsd or an open diff. The xrunner also has this axle but is 5lug.
The axle shafts are all the same for the 6lug.

    5lug 4cyl have a 7.5" axle.

that is a 8 inch ring gear and will not fit any other housing than a elocker housing SO DO NOT PURCHASE IT. You need a 8.4 inch 3rd member
