I am looking at getting a Tacoma... I have two in mind right now but I cant decide which one to get... Please give me yalls input.

First up is a 2004 Tacoma base 4x4 regular cab 4 cyl. White. Small lift, brush guard, aftermarket wheels. 148000 miles. Drove good. Not alot of power, but then again it is a 4cyl so you cant expect alot. Spray in bed liner and toolbox. Body is good condition with minor dents and dings here and there. Nothing big though.

Second up is a 2002 Tacoma 2x4 TRD Limited double cab with a locking rear differential. 118000 miles. nothing done to it. all stock. Impulse Red.

Please help me with this decision. One vs the other. Good and the bad.

Alittle about me. I don't do any offroading. The 4x4 would mainly be for convenience and the occasional offroad camping trip once or twice a year(I live in GA so weather where 4x4 would be needed is very rare). I dont need the room that the double cab has but it would be nice. This would mainly be commute back and forth to work and my wife and I's trip to TN once a month. Would the double cab be ok for me.....how well do they perform offroad through the woods being 2wd with a locker??? Main reason I ask this is because of the 2 I would prefer the double cab. Its a much better deal. But i don't know how well it would preform offroad when necessary. I also know that toyotas 4x4 cant hardly be beat and would absolutely get me wherever I needed to go. I would obviously get a really good all terrain tire like the BFG's so I know that would help with going through small mud holes and the woods in the 2wd. Sorry this seems long winded but I would really like help with this.

Thanks everyone for any advice you can give. I do appreciate it and I hope to be a member of this forum as soon as I get a Tacoma. Thanks again!!!

Well jason you are posting so we can assume you ARE a member already so scratch that off the wish list, How are they price wise meaning how much difference in price, if you don't off road (or dont intend to do much) The pre runner may be the better choice but then again most that get a prerunner wish they'd gotten a 4x instead, you really gotta think this one thru...

The regular cab 4x4 is 12000 and the double cab 2x4 is 13000. Double cab is alot better deal. And of course there is always negotiation on either of them, but the double cab is still a better deal. I just sold my F-150 and it was a 2wd and I owned it for 7 years and there was only about 2-3 occassions where 4x4 would have been nice. Other than that 2wd was fine for me. Thats why I was wondering how well the lockers worked. Both of my instances where 4x4 would have been great would most likely have comeout with a locker. But also both occassions where carrying a 22 ft trailer loaded down. I've never had a problem without a load. Real good tires help alot. Tires would be the first thing I would do to it other than tint the windows.

Thats what I am thinking too. Just didn't know how well the lockers actually worked. Someone on here said the factory lockers were "fluff"....so I could only imagine that means they suck. So its nice to hear a positive about the locker. Thanks!

Ha! Thanks man. Nice to see another G'vegas person on here. If I end up getting this truck we should go hit some trails if you know of any around. Test out the locker on my truck.

Thanks for the input man. But unfortunately I gotta go through dealership. I have a bike I will be trading in that I owe on. And yeah the regular cab is was overpriced so there would be alot of negotiating on it.

    Neither are smoking deals.

If I got to do it again I would go v6/manual the TRD would be a plus.

I have 4cyl auto its a slug but meh its all mine :)

The 4.0 6spds are nice too$$$ but thats a different section.

I just paid less than $7500 for a 2003 4x4 regular cab 2.7L 4-cyl 5spd with 99K miles on it and all service records. It was owned by the same guy for the last 8 years and 80K miles.

That dealer is smoking crack. The truck only cost $17K new.

Like others have said, I'd pass on both and continue looking, unless you are absolutely in need immediately. If it is narrowed down to both, the double cab is always more convenient, and more reasonablty priced than the single cab. But, I always feel that a truck should have 4x4, regardless of how much or little you think you'll use it.. that's just me! Definitely want to negotiate big time on either and also request service history, if any. Good Luck!

Personal opinion....Keep looking....I sold my 2001 4x4 extended cab with 115,000 miles on it for 10 grand flat. Only bought the thing for $11,500 with 90,000 miles on it and it was in great shape when I bought it! Even when I sold it the body and everything was very clean. It was a 5 banger V6 as well. I would look to see if you can find a better deal. But! I did wish I went with a double cab....which I have now in my 09 taco

Well, since you ask for it i might consider selling you my 01 silver limited editions Trd Off Road 2x4. 84k miles i'm still the original owner exellent conditions. the only after marker parts are 5100s bilstein shocks for front and rear adjustable ride heights. chrome nerf bars and chrom bull bar with
a set of 6 inches fog lights. everything else is bone stock.
or one more thing, truck came with super charger factory installed. top of the line in its class. give me a reasonable price. it's a 4 door. click my name and take a look at the truck.

Considering that I bought a 2006 trd sport auto 4x4 with 150k miles for 13k,, I would pass on both if I were you.

How long have you been looking at trucks bro?

You can probably find a better deal if you look around, search on autotrader, local dealers, drive around. Personally the double cab is a nice truck to own even if you don't have passengers you can toss things in the rear seats any time. The rear lockers help but if you're with other buddies they can probably help you in any event.
