    You are close.....But they took the letters "IBM", which was the biggest computer maker at the time and took HAL because it is just one letter back from IBM.

    It wasn't a movie line. The writer,creator or whomever needed a name for the 'puter. Someone got creative in the work up of the movie and there ya go.

    Just pressing your brain matter, That IBM thing was always just a myth. You can now rest comfortably.
