Yeah that is what I was getting at. Kind of a badge of honor of sorts.

If what OP said is accurate, OP wasn't driving on a trail technical enough to warrant sliders. The road shoulder gave way and the truck slide into the ditch. It's similar to sliding into the ditch by a paved road: the damage could've been a lot worse and beyond what sliders can protect.

In OP's case, the sill under the bottom edge of the door is dented in. This won't be a $580 repair. May be closer to $1500.

Fix it or leave it as is, but you do not want to get anywhere near insurance fraud. They will not pay if they know you were off road. You get to be the winner of that prize.

I backed into a pole  rant: I could have gone through insurance as it happened at a mall but choose the pocket route to teach myself an expensive lesson, stop driving like an idiot

-If it was a 4x4 trail pay it out of pocket
-If it was a rural road then its your call buddy but be ethical and remember what goes around comes around

You have mechanical skills? If I were in your shoes (I work in the collision repair industry) I would contact your local used parts distributors, for quick searches I use www.car-part.com, looks like you can get a used 2011 silver door in VA for around $600, it should come complete with working window motor and locks, if equipped... making for a nearly plug-and-play installation. Do some research on the installation to see if this is a project you'd be willing to undergo. Keep in mind, should you find one that is the same color, it may not match 100%... It's a gamble you take.

This information is incorrect. All you have to do is tell your insurance company the absolute truth. When I rolled my brand new at the time 04' Tacoma offroading on government property, I called and told my insurance company. The two big things they wanted to know is: was I intoxicated, and if I had filed an accident report with the DMV. Both were a no, so they sent me the paperwork to file the report and had me tow my truck to where I wanted it repaired. $7500 in damage later, all that came out of my pocket was $500. It pays to be truthful I guess.

To my surprise, my premiums went down after I made the claim. I figured I pay insurance for a reason, might as well use it.

Somehow I don't think there is a clause in it saying that you cant take your truck on a dirst road. OP use your insurance, I would refrain from saying I was offroading but tell them that it was a unimproved road that had the shoulder give way. Which is what happend.

lol just what your typical tacoma owner would do

First I think you should consider if you really need it repaired... Sure its a new truck but do you plan on selling it ever? If not, who cares about a dent?

Second.. I would plan to not have your insurance cover, but go ahead and ask if they would cover it even if it was offroad and who knows maybe they will cover it. Be truthful.

This is probably the best route. My dad always told me that lying was a bad thing, but not telling the whole truth was okay :) plus its not illegal, they didn't ask and you didn't tell

I can let you know how that would be handled by ICBC, our government run car insurance here in BC, atleast to the best of my knowledge. This exact situation never happened to me personally.

My insurance would cover that. No different then driving in the snow, in a city and sliding into a ditch.

Unfortunately though its 100% your fault. Your premiums will go up to pay for it over time. When you work it out its basically borowing the money from your insurance company then paying them back in INSANE interest. 2000$ damage and you pay them back 10,000$ over the next couple years before your premiums adjust back to normal.

If your insurance is run the same way, never use it unless it can be blamed on somebody else. Go take out a loan for 7%, much better deal.

What trail/road was it out of curiosity?

My personal take on it would be to report it to insurance. Don't lie about it, but tell them you were driving on an unimproved country road, and the shoulder went out. As has been said, that's the type of damage that one could get anywhere, and isn't offroad specific. That road in the pictures looks passenger car capable, so it's not like you were doing rock crawling in moab or something.

Go talk to your insurance agent and be truthful. When my son ran through a mailbox and post a couple of years ago, I called them up with questions of "will it be covered" (yes, no question in this case), and "what will it do to my rates". They ran the rates with the claim and I found that while they would cover it, I would have paid more in rate increases over the next 2 years then the cost of the repair. I paid for it myself.

If you look at the "How to Get There" section, it is the last leg:

How to Get There: From Lake City take Hwy 149 south, 2.5 miles. Turn right on the road to Lake San Cristobal. Follow paved road approximately 4 miles, then continue on dirt road for about 8.3 miles. Turn left at the fork and travel 1.4 miles to the Cataract Gulch trailhead. Park your 2WD vehicle and walk or drive a 4WD vehicle about 3.2 miles further along the road to the Cuba Gulch trailhead.
