Toyota already has a a diesel for our trucks, it's in the current model hilux that is sold everywhere else but here. And it's a damn awesome motor.

Whoops. Meant "acceleration". Posting before bed's not always the best idea. Glad to see there's some TurboDiesel fans here. Those are great cars.

Well, you have a good point there. When you do have to haul them into the shop, it hurts. But you don't have to very often at all, certainly less so than a gas engine.

The rest of the world can buy a Hilux/Tacoma diesel. Just not us. Fact is, the world runs on diesel. Gasoline is an expensive by-product that has some real liabilities, being super-picky about fuel quality is my biggest issue with gas engines. You can dump damn near anything in a diesel and it will run.

I wasn't interested in the extra cab, the 4x4, or any of the $$$ options that Toyota offers on these trucks, but I would have spent a considerable premium and waited for a factory delivery to get a diesel. Wish Toyota USA would get on it. Doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon.

It is not necessarily that repairs cost more but maintenance costs are higher.

repairs are expensive. especially from dealer or mechanic. some modern diesels have injector problems (short lifespan).

maintenance is expensive I agree, as most American diesels (trucks generally 6+liters of displacement) list oil capacity in gallons instead of quarts. I don't know that the smaller diesels that fit the taco would be so expensive though.

yes, but it doesn't gel up just from sitting in a tank/can like gas with ethanol can.

The 7.3 is 14 or 3.5 gallons just the bottom oil. If you do the top oil it's around .5 quart. No one ever does this.
6.0,6.4,6.7 all around 12.5-13 and they are messy and dirty to change.

I was doing a detail with a tree company in that kind of weather. The truck died while the arborist was up in the bucket about 40 feet up. They had to hit some kind of button as an emergency failsafe. Checked the diesel tank and it was like congealed fat, it gelled up. Maybe it's where you buy it or how its winterized.

It amazes me (and scares the shit out of me as well) how much hard earned knowledge we lose over time.
Diesel is a light oil, a decrease in temperature results in an increase in viscosity (meaning it doesn't flow well when it gets cold). It also absorbs water easily and water freezers at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you know that you will have to operate a diesel engine in cold climate......you add some kerosene or gasoline to the diesel to thin it out. You use a fuel heater. You run the engine a little every hour. You drain the water/paraffin out of the filters every now and then.
I watched a fire department lock up a ladder truck in sub-zero temps, with the ladder extended, because the diesel +ice; was too cold to flow thru the filters.

All areas with cold winters will have winter diesel just have to watch out for it if you travel from a hot area to a cold area.

I'll operate under the assumption you were referring to the tree company failing to take precautions on their vehicle, because I don't claim to know much, or care about, diesel engines. Just passing on my observations.
