Don't care which one you think you are cooler in. Toyota's manual transmissions are 10x stronger that the autos.

Yeah, but not both in one rig. haha That would be called an auto:stirthepot:

I wouldn't say we flock together. It's just hard to fight through all the manual love in here. In this case it is mostly just Mark and I, and a little bit of Brent, arguing against like 4 or 5 of you guys so we have to type more to keep up. haha Usually in the auto vs manual arguments the auto guys are even more outnumbered just because there is such a bias for manuals that everybody just assumes they are better and wants one. The bias basically comes from the fact that they were better until somewhere in the 90's. Since then autos have improved so much that it is getting hard to find manuals anymore.

My big beef is this. You can say they are more fun to drive, I'll bite that, I love "racing" my manual car around the streets, but I wouldn't say they are better offroad, especially rockcrawling. Autos take the cake there.

Well I wasn't talking about racing per se. Just offroading in general. I can see how autos can be slower. Part of why powerglides were so popular back in the day on drag cars. Only had to shift once and the race was pretty much over when it finally did shift.

We've had this discussion before... Of course if you put a auto in say 3rd, when you slow down enough, or floor it, it will downshift to 1st or 2nd because those gears are now more ideal than 3rd given the current conditions, it will not exceed 3rd gear though. Same thing in a manual only you would have to shift it yourself. When is there a case where say 3rd would be more idea to be in than 2nd (and not just you are going too fast for 2nd gear or something obvious like that, because if that was the case the auto would just shift up to 3rd to fix the problem anyway). I can only think of one and that is trying to take off from a stop at an icy intersection. In my experience my car will take off better if I feather the clutch a little and take off in 2nd, I get less wheel spin. 2 catches there, 1 we are talking about trucks so just put it in 4wd and problem solved, 2 an auto doesn't have this issue because you just let off the brakes and either let the auto creep forward on its own to get you moving or lightly touch the throttle.

Seems like a good time to point out that 90% or better of the Ultra 4 comp buggies and other comp trucks are all Autos. :)

But you can hang onto your manual tranny arguements as long as you'd like.

Not anymore... I can't speak for 1st gens, but on 2nd gens it is pretty common that the auto is considered stronger than the manual. As to whether or not that is true, I don't know, but modern auto transmissions are pretty tough compared to the autos of previous years. Prior to the Tacomas, I would certainly say the manual is stronger, but autos back then were prone to overheating due to lack of cooling... Notice how all diesel pickups run autos now (except for Dodge and they mostly use manuals as a selling point now). Modern autos are much stronger than they were before and when paired with a cooler that is as big or bigger than the engines radiator they can take a lot of abuse.

Manuals are a lot cheaper to replace/repair than autos though, but again that is assuming one will fail. haha

They don't run yota transmissions and don't "crawl" anything though. They are all out spine breakers... ot really a linear correlation

I will agree that the second gen auto is pretty damn good, the first gen on the other hand is a pile. Seen them fail so many times and done a lot of swaps to manuals for people.

    :woot:

RCToy has his at a shop getting rebuilt. Had like 220K miles on it and his abuses the fuck out of it. One of the seals was leaking fluid really bad so he said fuck it and just had the shop go over the entire thing. He basically told them, replace anything that even looks like it might go out soon. He doesn't want to have to touch it for another 100K. But the fact that it has survived 220K, with him of all people driving it is pretty damn good. haha

Anybody else? I still have 90 minutes of work to kill...

We just added like 3 pages to your build thread Monte. haha

Monte, i'm buying a swing arm skid for my quad sometime soon, i've narrowed it down to 2 choices, the difference being price and thickness, the cheaper one is 3/16ths aluminum and the more expensive one is 1/4 inch aluminum, the price difference is $35.

is it worth it to get the extra 1/16th of a inch?
    the quad weighs ~400 LBS.

For aluminum I'd go 1/4". It's still light but aluminum bends and cuts easier. I'd want 1/4".
