Looking at getting a pair of these subs.

    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Subwoofers/Shallow+Mount/TS-SW841D

What amp would you recommend powering these with?

They are 500 watts peak each. 125 RMS. Single voice coil 4 ohm.

I'm guessing wiring them in series would be best? So then I'd need a 2 ohm capable amp.

So when looking for an amp and its power output in this case do I add the total of both subs together? In this case it would be 1000 watts peak?

Would something like this be recommended?

    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Amplifiers/GM+Digital+Series/GM-D9601

Or is that to much power?

This is going in a 03 double cab.

Thanks in advance to any and all help :)

IMO way too much power in that amp, even it's smaller brother has too much (again, IMO), but for it's price, it would be easier to get the smaller one and just keep the gain turned down some.

If you wired the subs in series, you'd end up with an 8 ohm load, not 2. Wiring them in parallel would give you a 2 ohm load.

You should also not look at a sub's or amp's peak handling/output, you need to look at their RMS or nominal values. In this case, 120w per sub and 500w on the smaller amp.

IMO.. That is way way too much power for those subs...

I agree with the other guys - when you wire them in parallel you're going to have a 2-ohm load at the amp and only 240 watts RMS. All of the better quality mono amps that I'm seeing put out 500 watts at 2-ohms (twice the power you'll need). So basically putting the gain at half is the max you'd want to do

Here's a link to the mono pioneer amp Turbo is referring to...http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Amplifiers/GM+Digital+Series/GM-D8601

If you aren't set on 8" subs, you could bump up to (2) 10" pioneers and that amp would handle them nicely at 2ohms

I had a link in mine... it was just more cleverly disguised :spy:

I've always wanted a good reason to use that icon :)

Awesome thank you for the input guys!!

So would this be a better fit for the subs then?
    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Amplifiers/GM+Series/GM-5500T

Its rated at 190 RMS x 2 at 2 ohms so I'd obviously wanna keep the gain down a little?

I'm not set on a pioneer amp. Kind of stuck on the subs tho since they are a shallow mount and will fit in the sub enclosure I have for behind the rear seats in my DC

So if you have recommendations I'm open :)

Hey there you go, that amp is pretty much perfect for those subs. But you need to be looking at the per channel output at 4 ohms - now that you are looking at a two channel amp, you will have one sub wired to each channel and the subs will no longer be wired in parallel with each other. So now you basically have each sub seeing its own 4 ohm load at the amp. And that amp sends out 125W per channel at 4 ohms and your subs can handle 120W - a perfect match and you can turn the gain up as much as you want

Perfect solution, and as jlleiber stated, each sub gets wired to one of the two channels, although I disagree with the statement about turning up the gain as much as you want...

The gain, at least as far as I was taught, IS NOT a volume control... it's intent is to match up to the output offered from your pre-amp source (usually a headunit, sometimes some sort of hi/lo level converter or signal processor). And while difficult to tune properly without a significant amount of external hardware, it's often mistaken for a volume control. It's also more difficult IMO to tune for a subwoofer (compared to a set of components) as, at least for me, distortion is much harder to hear in low frequencies.

Oh interesting..I never actually knew that - after some quick googling though, you are very much correct. The higher the pre-amp voltage, the lower you can set your gain and still see full power output from the amp. Good to know
