I recently purchased a pair of 16"x8" TRD Off Road wheels for my 2-13 Tacoma 4WD LTD. Before I bought the wheels, I checked with several sources (including Toyota dealerships) to make sure that the TPMS that came with on the 18" wheels on my Taco would fit the new wheels, and everyone said that they were compatible. Well, today I went to get the wheels and tires installed and the TPMS off my rims would not fit the new 16" wheels. The guys at the tire shop showed me how they would not fit (the TPMS angle was too sharp and made contact with the wheel so they could not be installed).
I have called my local Toyota dealership, another dealership in another state and they said the same thing, that the TPMS that I have SHOULD be used on the new wheels. Here is the info from my TPMS:

The FCC ID on the TPMS I have is: PAXPMV107J
That ID corresponds to part #: 42607-06011
The sensor is supposed to be a "20 degree" sensor.

HERE are the 16" wheels that bought (though not from this seller). Notice that they list the compatible TPMS part number as the same number I have listed above (the ones that came with my Taco LTD).

Here is a pic of the 18" wheels that came with my Taco:

Here are the TRD Off Road 16x8" wheels that I am installing:

When the guys at the tire store showed me how the TPMS would not fit, it almost looked like you need a TPMS that was straight (no bend to the sensor). I am totally confused and have no idea what sensors I need. They tried "universal" TPMS at the tire shop but could not program them (get the TPMS light to go out). Does anyone have any ideas? ANY help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Those are the Ivan Stewart wheels, not TRD Off-road, though not sure what they are marketing them as. From what I recall the older versions of the Stewart's were not made to accept TPMS sensors, only the newer versions did. You might verify that what you bought are the new versions, not someones old stock.

I have talked to three different Toyota dealerships now, and shown them the pics of the wheels. THISguy selling the wheels on eBay says I have the right sensors too. Checkout his listing.
Iam thoroughly confused. When I looked at them trying to make the sensorsfit into the new wheels, it looked like the angle was too steep/sharp and the black part of theTPMS made contact with a ridge on the inside of the wheel. It almostlooked like it needed a straight TPMS with no angle. I wonder if Toyota has somethinglike that?
    Thanks again for your help.

Only other thing I would try is to do some searching for Ivan Stewart on this board and start posting or PMing people who have them and see what you find. Otherwise might just fork over some more $$$ for the TPMS mounting bands and use them instead.

I just dropped mine off for new tires and wheel install this morning. My TPMS light has been on for a while now so im not even sure all mine are working. Rather than pay to dismount the stock tires/wheels to get the sensors that im not even sure will fit or work I'm just leaving them off. Guess I'll get some black tape to put over the light LOL.

I did email the Toyota Dealership that was selling the exact same wheels on eBay and they said the same thing other dealers had said. I also emailed the guy I bought mine from, same thing. Everyone seems to think that the TPMS that were taken off of the LTD wheel SHOULD work with the IS wheels. I also have a GREAT parts guy named Tim at TRD Sparks that is looking into it for me (those guys are awesome!).
I don't know anyone that is actually running the wheels so not sure who to ask.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Everything in my system shows them as compatible for the 20 degree sensors, but the wheel could have been revised to accept sensors. I cannot find any old notes or old instructions on these wheels to help!

Forget the sensors. They are a pointless waste of money and time.

I've read in one of these threads that the light can be turned off. I ran wheels without tpms for awhile on my 2011 and the dealership turned the light off for me.

I asked today and the dealer told me it was not possible to shut it off. I saw the thread on cutting the wire.. Not sure i wanna do that though, I bet it voids ur warranty.

I think that if I did decide not to use TPMS, and could not get any to work, then I will open up the gauge cluster and remove/cover up the diode. That is a last resort though. I really want to make this work.

Your dealer is a moron. Like I said, my dealer turned it off/set it at zero, whatever. Point is, no tpms and no light.

I am almost positive you can turn it off with TIS and the PC that the dealership uses. It may depend on the vehicle though.

So basically that is a big hose clamp that goes around the inside of the wheel and you attach the TPMS to it? That is pretty wild. One thing I did note was that when they tried to put the TPMS into the new wheels they were making contact with a ridge on the inside of the wheel, like I said earlier. But it seemed like you could have just flipped them over so that they were angling in the opposite direction. Does anyone know if the black part of the sensor has to be resting against the wheel?

You should be able to flip them over, but the downside is that you are one uninformed/inept tire changer away from shearing the sensor off, if they are pointing up.

A few years ago when I was looking for some different wheels, a tire place wanted to flip my TPMS sensors like suggested. I would not let them do it.

BTW, the "big hose clamps" are the "TPMS bands" that I referred too in one of my earlier posts. You do have options, just need to research and pick one.

OK, so today my dealership looks at the wheels that I have and "guess" that they are for pre-'06 vehicles thus it did not use a TPMS. They sent me back to the place where I bought the tires andi had everything installed to ask to buy a set of aftermarket TPMS (the ones they tried to install and DID fit, but could not program), they reluctantly agreed. Actually, the dealer recommended a tire shop that I have found does not exist, but I checked with two other shops in the general area anyway. I took the aftermarket TPMS back to the dealership (yet another service rep) and ask if they can try to program ONE of the four aftermarket TPMS and if everything is OK, install the other four. First they try to send me to one of the tire stores that I just left, then they agree to try and set me up an appointment for the morning. I then pick up four of the aftermarket TPMS to take with me to the dealership, but decide to check online for myself. As it turns out, the Tire store sold me the wrong "universal" TPMS. Toyota TPMS run at 315hz, but the ones that they sold me run at 433hz. So tomorrow I have to go exchange the ones that I have with the right ones and try to get them installed. I THINK that I finally have it figured out and the "universal 315hz" sensors should work.
Here is a link to EZ-Sensor. If you look HERE there is a complete list of compatible vehicles and type of EZ Sensor to use.
Man I hope this helps someone else. Hate to think I went through this just to turn off the idiot light!
I will let you know how it turns out.

OK, now I am thoroughly frustrated. After talking to the dealership, the tire shop and even checking out the web sites for EZ-Sensor Tire Sensors (the "universal sensors" installed in my tires) and Ateq the maker of TPMS tools for the home user or professional. First I bought BOTH the Ateq VT30 thinking that I could use it to program the new sensors and then register them with my TIS. That did not work so I called Ateq and they said that I needed the TPM QuickSet, so I bought one of those as well. I figured that I spent a total of $350 on both tools, and if they did not work I could return them. Otherwise I was looking at a $200 bill from the tire shop (at least). After the VT30 did not work, I tried the QuickSet. The quickset appeared to work as I got a message saying "You pressure sensors have been programmed successfully, drive your vehicle until the TPMS light goes out". I drove the truck for about 15 miles and the light stayed on.

I tried the QuickSet again with the same results. I am totally confused because when I used the QuickSet

, it displayed the same TPMS sensor numbers that the dealership gave me so:

the numbers were either from the original sensors and were still registered in the TPMS ECU or:

The TPMS ECU was reading the sensors but the light was STILL on.

I am totally stumped. I think I am going to contact EZ-Sensor again and have them get with the tire shop that sold the sensors to me and make them fix the damn thing. I do not know what else to do.

I wanted to update everyone about the TPMS issue. The sensors that were mounted in the wheels (temporarily) were EZSensors. I had contacted a man at Schrader Corp. (the maker of the EZSensor) and told him the situation: That I had four of the EZSensors installed in my vehicle and that my Toyota Dealership was able to read the numbers, but was unable to make the light go out. I explained that I had purchased the tires and sensors at Big Brand. He said that whoever programs the sensors HAS to have a Bartec Scantool with EZSensor software on it OR another scantool (there are only a couple that work with the EZSensor S/W) that worked with the EZSensor software.
Steve at Big Brand Tire ended up finding out that they did not have the EZSensor software even though they had been sent the EZSensors to install??? So Steve ordered up some VDO Redi-Sensors and they worked flawlessly! During my research, a guy from DicountTireDirect.com tried to sell me some Redi-Sensors and told me that the Redi-Sensors were partially pre-programmed compared to the EZ-Sensors making them much more user friendly and easier to install and program.
Man, I hope my experience helps someone else. I also wanted to thank Dai HE (my local service writer) again for not charging me for my last service call. Big Brand (the tire company I bought the tires and sensors from) on the other hand charged me another $210 for fixing the problem. I understand that it took them time to figure out the problem, but on the other hand they probably should have known what they were dealing with to start with. Next time (if there is a next time) I deal with Big Brand and am dealing ONLY with Steve. Without Hai's help this problem never would have been resolved.
