I voted no. I went from a 4x4 hemi commander to a compact truck to save on gas. The hemi supposedly had the cylinder shutoff thing to save gas when cruising, but it never seemed to help. I usually got 12-16mpg in the Jeep, now I get 20mpg in the taco. It has more than enough power for me, and I dont have to tow a yacht.
Once I get my lift and tires on, I will probably drive even more conservative.
If I wanted a V8 truck, I would have bought the Tundra crewmax.

    That would be awesome!
    ...but I still wouldn't buy it :)

I'm loving my 4 banger even more now that gas prices are approaching $4/gallon. 4 cylinders are more than enough IMO.

You make a point. I dont have a need for a regular cab, cause of the wife and baby on the way but for people that dont need a big truck still have the need to pull things every now and then. I pull a Uhaul Trailer from AZ to UT and it honestly felt like someone had a rope tied to me holding me back....A V8 would be so nice, I dont want/need a big as truck my Taco is very practical for my use. But on that note, the V6's were just not meant to pull anything.....JMO

I would go full size before getting a V8 in this truck. I just can't see the case you could make to say you need more power in a midsize truck. If you need more power and towing/hauling, you just get a bigger heavy duty truck.

I'm averaging 19 mpg in my V6 DCLB and that's winter time (letting it run to warm up, lots of 4WD driving and a ski box on) I'd much rather have a V6 than a 4 banger for the power and only lose 1-1.5 mpg... Just my .02

I would like to see Toyota put a 5.7 in the Tacoma with a fox suspension package to make it sort of a raptor killer. Id almost wonder if it wouldn't get better mileage, with such a powerful engine it would barely be working. For example, my dads 2006 GTO gets 24mpg on the highway doing 80 miles an hour, and it does about 16 around town of you keep your foot out of it.

The diesel for the mpg would be great but one thing that turns me off about modern diesels is how complicated they are. In an effort to make them more civilized and "Eco friendly" they've made them less efficient and more complicated. The EPA has absolutely RUINED diesels over the last couple years. At the current rate, I wouldn't buy a diesel because of just that. If we can do away with all the bs EPA regs and Toyota could bring us a real one, I'd be Ll over it.

I'd wanna have the Eco-Boost V6 out of the F150. The right amount of power and torque right where you need it. Off idle. Too bad the 4.0 doesn't have any aftermarket tuning. I'd love to throw in some forged pistons and rods, and bolt some small set of twins and have instant boost and torque off the line and make around 370ish rwhp.

our 4.7 tundra gets the same mpg as my 4.0 and is loaded with 1000lbs + tools. does it with less effort, which seems like it would be better for longevity. I'll probably just end up supercharging the 4.0. Similar torque curve and power when needed and nearly unaffected mpg while cruising. Not worth the money and effort to do te swap unless something catastrophic were to happen to my stock motor.

Just supercharge your 4.0 and I think you would get more bang for your buck. And talking a truck I didn't mention a Turbo. They kick in too late for the pulling power advantage

I think our trucks have a very respectable amount of HP for it's size, if you want MORE HP out of your truck you should really upgrade to a TUNDRA, for a midsize truck I think we are doing just fine! If you want a speed demon, you should really get a sportscar, our Tacoma's are just fine with what they have!!

Is the engine bay bigger on the 2nd gens? My 2.7 seems to barely fit in my first gen, much less a motor with twice the cylinders and 2 liters bigger
