So after reading about 80 pages on tire sizes last night I still have no clue on what size to go with. Anyone in here have any experience or thoughts on 255/85 vs 285/75 for tires?

Well those are two different tire sizes in height and width. Height obviously just gives you more ground clearance but width is where you can decide on your driving style/terrain. A skinny tire will help in places like mud or soft snow. The tire has less surface area meaning that there is more weight pushing down per sq. inch and the overall goal is to cut through the slush and get to hard ground that you can get traction on. Hence why most badass mud trucks run tractor tires. Skinny tires on the street will also net you better gas mileage because there is less surface area contacting the road.

Fatter tires are better for things like rocks and tree branches were there is more tire to grab on to stuff. So for instance a trail truck would benefit more from a fat tire because of all the things the tire may encounter. Also a fatter tire will give you better traction on road for things like towing or handling around corners. Of coarse when you get into choosing an actual tire things like: tire compound, tread design, sideway strength, overall weight, etc., all come into play. Also not all tires that are the same size, numbers wise, are actually the same size. For instant my buddy has some 285/75/16 Nitto mud grapplers and his tires are almost 2" wider on the tread then my 285/75/16 KM2s.
You're a light weight from what I remember
Excuse my ignorance but what tha fuck is dtlt?

Lots of different factors as stated very well above me in a previous post. Do you have a first gen or second gen? Going up to a larger tire size on first gens you can feel a definite loss in power without regearing. I heard second dont lose as much power due to being geared differently and the 4.0 But, what do I know? I drive a 4runner. I have 265/75/16 on mine and it drags ass on stock 4.10 and looks goofy with my lift. I need 4.88 and 35"

Yeah people that have the 4.0 say 33's really aren't a difference in power but I got the 2.7 and us people's def have problems with 33's and stock gears. Haha

I guess I will see how the stock 265/70R16 do at the meet in Oct before I decide to go taller or wider. Wish there was a clear cut this is definitely better than the other. I guess that would make my life to simple. Lol

I hope I don't come across as an ass (cause sometimes I think I do) but I don't see what's not clear cut about your options. Different tire sizes are better for different aspects of on and off roading. The goal is to choose the best tire for the needs that you most want to achieve. I guess this could be easier if you stated what exactly you were looking for out of a tire. And if you base it purely on the Oct meet, from the looks of the terrain, the tallest, most aggressive, thickest sidewall and fattest tire you can fit under your truck will be the best

Anyone in the knox area changed there rear drum brakes? I've done one set of rear drums in my life and it ended up with the truck on the back of a tow.

I am thick skinned. I can handle tough love. Lol. I guess my issues are within what I like being the fatter tires looks vs the skinny being more applicable to what better suits my needs. Thanks for the good info.
