2.4L Error Code P0300 #2 Misfire

Trouble with the 1998 Toyota Tacoma 2.4L truck. I have been dealing with issue for months with no resolve. Here we go........I start the truck when it is cold and it runs like new, as i warms up it starts missing, it is drive able, just idles ruff and eventually the "Engine Check Light" blinking and then a solid no blinking. It continues to run this way until it is parked and gets cold again. Here is the list of things i have done based on the OBD-2 scanner P0300 error.
1.Replace all Plugs and wires.
2.Replaced both Coils
3.Moved a good fuel injector to the failing cylinder. (No Change)
4.Compression 210psi
5.LOOKED for intake leak!
6.Brought it to a reputable, and they could not figure it out.
7.So here i am puzzled on what to do next.
8.Oh, cant leave the PCM out, that was the shops next thing to replace, i do not get it is the PCM.
9.Timing Belt has not been replaced-it is probally due for it's first replacment.
Has 115000 on it-and is in excellent shape.
Here are the details and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction to get this figured out Thanks.

 

P0300 is general misfire, not #2 cyl. that would be P0302. if you are sure the ignition side is good, then start looking at the fuel system.

BTW- the 2.4 has a timing chain.

alrite, bro u and i are in the same boat. mine is 2.7l and yours is 2.4l.
we both had the code P0300. i just found out that i had a leak down issue on plug 1 and plug 2. the explanation and conditions of your truck match mine 99.9% of the issue so i'm pretty damn sure that your problems and mines are identical, cylinder leakage inside the chambers. i'm planning to replace my cylinder head, timing chain and water pump. i recently found out that the timing chain is only good to 150k miles after that it will get loose, chip out and extended. this might cause the cylinders to go bad.

Just wondering where did you find out the timing chain is only good for 150k?

I just find that strange because the chain is basically a lifetime part. You can't always believe everything on the internet.

 

I had the same problem before on my 98 2.4 runs fine when cold, once warm the engine misfires, random misfire ran a bunch of test, and it ended up being a dead injector, pull them out and check the ohm resistance on them I forgot the exact value but they should be close with one another.

 

I am having the same issue. After reading the suggestions and changing out lots of parts, still no joy.
changed the:
Throttle Position sensor (that I have to leave unplugged or i cant drive it)
Crankshaft Position Sensor
Plugs and wires
distributor cap and rotor
fuel filter
fuel pump
cleaned out the Idle Air control Valve
cleaned out throttle body
added injector cleaner
ran through some sea foam
changed oil and filter
changed fuel presser valve

Still haven't fixed things. Can use some advise! Spent a lot of money on parts and sensors, etc... just need my truck to work correctly again.

I have the Service Manual for my truck, 2003 Tacoma 2RZ, 2wd 5-speed. No where in there could I find a spec for life of timing chain. I called my local Toyota service department and asked them what their books said and they came back with, "its replaceable on an as-needed basis." I've had this motor rebuilt once, currently it has 309K on it.

 

So on my 2003, I'm getting P0300-303, which is a misfire, cylinders 1-3. I changed injectors, new plugs, coil packs. My truck had a rough idle for months when I did this. After these changes the first time I started it, there was no check engine light and I could hear it was running smooth. I let it get to operating temperature, and then shut it off. I was stoked. When I started it again, the chk light came back on as it had been for months, and the rough idle and bad mileage were back. I don't have intake or low cylinder pressure, but my code reader also mentioned 'Evaporative System Monitor', so looks like I'll be chasing that now. I live in stupid California, land of smog laws so I need to get this fixed in the next few months. If anyone has any input, please let me know.

 

the only thing left to do is a leak down test.
