Well I borrowed my uncles giant and went on my first ever true mountain bike trail ride... I made it 5 miles and was about dead not really tired but got over heated was close to 100... Was really disappointed thought I would do a lot better and I was in way better shape...

If you have rims drilled for presta valves you won't get a schrader in it unless you drill a bigger hole.

If you have a rim drilled for Schrader valves you can put a presta valve in it, but it's a good idea to get one of the adapters for it. Otherwise the oversized hole could pinch your tube.

I have two bikes with different types. I honestly like the Schrader better because I can air it up with my compressor without having to screw on the inflating adapter. My wife has a Schrader tube in her bike that you can't even get the screw on adapter far enough on to allow you to air it up. I have to jimmy rig air into it. I suppose they may sell a presta attachment for air compressors but I haven't looked.

    Prestas look cooler...lol

If I was in the market for a cross country I would go carbon. The components can be upgraded. I am a Shimano components fan boy but the SRAM stuff isn't bad.

So I'm more than 3 weeks into my Road Trip. I finally got a roof rack because I was just so annoyed with having to put my bike in the bed when it had a hard cover. Someday I'll get a shell is all I'm sayin.

Snapped my chain on a ride last night. Luckily I was less than a quarter of a mile from the car.

Gabe are you set on a hardtail 29er? If not I would for sure go f/s. You can pick up a good f/s for 1500 or a little more. Not sure what shop you are going to but I would hit up bikebling in esco as they have so many different rigs to try out. Shops should start dealing as well, looking to sell through 2013 inventory. Always good to hit up demo days too, as you get to put some miles on a few different bikes in the dirt. BB has had a few demos @ hodges. Also check out the classifieds on socaltrailriders.org or dirttreaders.com as there tend to be some great deals on low mileage bikes that have had lots of upgrades. You can get way more bike for the money buying slightly used.

Yeah ... imagine watching it from one of those cliffs in person! I love going to this event and watching my brother but it definitely makes me anxious thinking of the worst. I've seen guys break their backs, sketchhhhhhy stuff!
