Relocating 7 Pin Trailer Harness

Ok, yes I've searched about how this is done etc. I have a new idea/question for us all. We seem to brainstorm well.. I'd like to relocate the factory Toyota harness to the left of the license plate. I've seen a lot of folks doing a aftermarket item that is intended to be surface mounted. I'd prefer to use the factory toyota unit. Ideas?

 

I just drilled a hole witha hole saw, and used two new bolts with locking nuts. It is stable enough.

 

I have to do the same!

Do you think this fit's into your idea? It looks like it would be a factory look once all is said and done? I can't make up my mind yet. (grin)

Edit: just read that he bought a replacement plug from Wally-World - I wonder if we can still retain the factory plug somehow....hmmmm...

trd2001- yes, please take some pics andshow off your work. One other issue I have is when you cut a hole in the bumper, you now have the edges which are not chrome dipped or painted. Did you paint the exposed metal edge? I'm thinking about some HD Paint???

 

I used tie wraps and attached it to the bumper, until I get a new rear bumper.

This is the stupidest place to put the harness for a truck that is meant to leave the pavement.

 

I relocated mine without drilling, I saw someone did this mod in TN and since I had some SS flat stock laying around I made me this.

This pics of the bracket were taken when it was being made last yr, I'll take some of it installed and post them later, the idea was to swing the OEM bracket back up between the spare and the hitch cross member.

Here is what i did. I did mess up when I was drilling ( should not of had those cold ones ). Its a bit off, at least its straight (Looks off in the picture) . I tried to put it on the flat area close to the plate. I did not want to get rid of the light in the bumper as I have seen elsewhere. I just applied touch up paint where i drilled. I had had it for a year.

I got hit at work by a Honda Civic in my work parking lot yesterday. If it was still on the bottom, it would of been done.

I like this location best of all. Thanks for the idea. I don't like to look at the wire box at all, I rarely tow anything.

I have to thank you OP for the great idea. Went to Ace hardware last night and picked up 2 L brackets with holes pre drilled. Had to widen the 2 holes closest to the hitch to use the OEM bolts. Painted them black and bought 2 black bolts and nuts for the new location of the 7 pin. Works well, took no time at all. I was worried about dropping the spare tire but the 7 pin is out of the way so the spare will drop like normal.

AWESOME WORK!!!

I am not meaning to hijack the thread.

I have a quick question can someone explain to me how to disconnect the trailer plug connection? Its the plug with the white connector on it.

After 6 months i need to get some new bolts, this time ill use ones that wont rust
