No, Mississippi for school. Florida is hopefully a few years after that. Working my way across the gulf.

Hi, I saw a few posts about going to Big Bend back in May. Anyway, I'm heading out there in a few weeks to do some camping for 3 days and I'm needing some experienced advice. I drive a 2010 Double Cab Prerunner TRD. Totally stock TRD suspension but on 265/75/16 Hankook ATM's.

We're wanting to do some backcountry camping from the truck and wondering how the roads are? The national park website recommends 4x4 in some areas, but I'm wondering if my Prerunner would do ok with the locking rear diff? Also, has anyone been to the Big Bend Ranch State Park? There are a couple of really cool looking campsites that say "4x4 high clearance" to access them. '

I guess my question is...Can my Prerunner handle this? Are they just being overly cautions for liability reasons? If my Prerunner can't do it, I have a '91 Land Cruiser that would do fine in that terrain, but not as confident in the reliability when I'm 20 miles down a rocky road with a vehicle that has 271K miles on it.

Have not been to the NP but heard the roads are better there. The state park has a lot of sites you can get to in 2wd. We camped at one that was easy getting there but some hill climbs to get out were tricky if you didn't use 4x4. Also if it was wet I'm sure the state park roads are a lot different. I don't want to tell you no worries at the state park but your should get you to most of the sites.

Thanks for the info. I feel pretty confident in the Taco, but just didn't want to get into a situation that I regretted and ruin the trip. As I mentioned, I'm fully stock TRD...no sliders or lift or, most importantly...NO 4X4. What was I thinking when I bought the Prerunner? Oh yeah...$6K less...that was it :)

Do you remember the names of the places you went in the state park? I was thinking about the Rancherias or Guero campsites, but both list 4x4 for the access.

Have you taken the Taco off road before? A locker a d smart driving make a world of difference compared to an open diff.

We camped at Gualle 2. We stayed mostly in that part of the park and also explored another road that went south of the ranger station.

What this guy said... If you stay out of mud, and know how to drive there is not much you won't be able to do if you stay off of true 4x4 trails.. I plan on a locker on my prerunner just because of issues I have on a rock climb getting to where we shoot.. Two wheel drive can do alot more then people give them credit for... If you go somewhere you think you could have issues.. 4x4 or 2x4 make sure you bring proper recovery gear..

My dad used to have the same exact car when he was 16. Almost 40 years later and he's driving one again; I've never seen him so excited. I can't wait to go on a couple of local cruise nights with him around here.

Thanks for all the info and advice. I feel pretty confident in the Taco and with the rear diff lock, I think I'll do just fine.

What were the roads like that went to Guale 2? That is one of the sites that I'm interested in. Would my truck make it ok with smart driving?

The roads get REAL tight when you get into a low area and pin stripes are not avoidable. Getting to the site was no issue but there were 2 hill climbs getting out that would be iffy with 2x4. One is right as you leave the site. I made it up once in 2 but we all had to put it in 4 the rest of the time.

This is a picture from the road that leads to the site. The silver truck is parked at the site.

I brought 6 gallons of extra fuel but wish I had more. Don't know how much exploring you plan to do it takes a good amount of fuel and time to reach the ranger station. Probably an hour to reach it once you leave black top and it is another hour to the Gualle site.
