5.29's out back, 5.38's in front.

4runner is going to be sweet, downpour!

 

How would that wear on my transfer case??

I mean that's 1.7% difference.

 

Its common to do it that way. You don't engage 4x4 when you are on dry pavement anyways, so the tires "slip" to take up the difference.

Thanks guys. Didn't get too much done today. Slid the axles under and did some frame plating, mocked up the rear drivers side lower link to make sure it clears the gas tank. Good to go.

More tomorrow. Here's a pic with my 35's. Axles aren't in position yet, but here's an idea:

 

You'll be fine with that setup. IIRC stay within 4%.

Lol im sure it would - i dont wana shorten it tho. PLus i enjoy my e - locker. I spent a few hours yesterday talking to people with sas double cabs and double cabs on 37s (tacomaworld, ttora, cardomain, piratebay) as well as a the owner of Wahoo fabrication(Kelso) and 4wheelparts(Portland). 95% of them said 4:88s will work just fine and it's not worth it to run mixed ratio gears.


So officially decided on 4:88s.

Got a quote for Nitro gears:
Parts plus install kit = $400

G2 Gears:
Parts plus install kit = $304

Install cost = $175.

I've never heard of G2 gears before. But did some research and alot of people seem to like them. They come with a 10 year warranty off the bat. I was a little biased towards Nitro simply because they are locally made (Washington).

Doesn't your truck have the 3.4l, Jonnie? It will probably be fine with 4.88's especially since you won't be rock crawling with it. What tires do you have in mind?

Who did you talk to again? Because with 4.88's and 37s, your transmission will be searching for gears on the highway. Everyone you talked to is feeding you a load of shit and you ate it. There are PLENTY of people that use the 5.38/5.29 combo without issue. I always say gear lower than you think you need because you'll also be adding quite a bit of weight to the truck which will slow it down. If you don't plan on going bigger than 35's, do 4.88's. If you had a manual transmission, 4.88's would be fine too but you have a double cab and the slush box really sucks power out of the truck unless you have an upgraded valve body. IMO, deal with the mismatched gears and forget about it, it's better to be geared lower than higher

 

Well the owner oh Wahoo Fabrication has built (let's just say more rigs than you), and I spoke with a tech at 4wheelparts portland store. Im gonna go ahead and say both of them are qualified to answer my questions. I also sent out a good 8 p.m.s to people on forums who are/have running 37s with a 3.4L automatic and 4:88 combo - nearly EVERY single person who had that combination said it worked great. A couple guys walked me through different converion ratios explaining for 4:88 combo would nearly put you back to stock. Just saying i did a damn good amount of research and put alot of hours at work into this. I appreciate the advice but stating "Everyone you talked to is feeding you a load of shit and you ate it." is a bit much and unwanted opinions.

I spoke with people who have been there and done that - that's the advice i listed to instead of those preaching from the backseat.
