    Why not open up the gauge cluster, grab a black sharpie and write in the 10, 30, 50, 70, etc?? And while it's open, grab a red sharpie and write the kph.

    Be happy you don't have what we were stuck with from around '80 to '85 or so.

    Speedos all stopped at 85, and they were incremented:

    5...15...25...35...45...55...65...75...85

    Serious gearheads would change the drive gear in the tailshaft of the trans to allow the KPH scale to read MPH, which took the speedo up to 140.

    Seriously... 55 was larger and red!

    55mph national speed limit imposed by Nixon during the 1973 Arab oil embargo.
    1987, Reagan modified it allowing up to 65 on rural roads, and the whole thing was repealed in 1995.

    A lot of states refused to enforce it. States like Nevada and Montana had a policy of "Reasonable and Prudent"... they simply applied the Basic Speed Law prior to the 55 limit. Threatened with the loss of federal highway funding, Montana would stop you and write you a ticket for wasting natural resources... $5 fine, no points, payable on at the time of the stop.

    Funny, then the limit was repealed, none of the states went back to "Reasonable and Prudent". Most of those states went to 75 or 80.
    California had been 65 prior, but went to 70 as the state max (65 in suburban areas, still 55 in some urban areas, and 55 for trucks and those towing trailers)

    Interesting...am I the only one who thinks the difference in speed for trucks and cars is actually more dangerous..especially when it's 70-55..and cars are doing 75-80 while trucks are doing 60

    I agree completely.

    And in more congested areas it causes traffic backups because the trucks can't get up a running start to make it up a grade.
    And California-registered trucks are governed to 60, so they couldn't even if they wanted to.

    Quite the opposite, can't wait to go back. Drove through Banff National Park and was completely and utterly blown away with the beauty. I'm old enough to remember driving before the 55 mph national speed limit and at this old age I'm just now finding out about this?! :eek:

    I was so blown away that I completely changed our plans so I could go back through Yellowstone and the Tetons just to compare. I worked in Yellowstone and the surrounding areas for 4 summer seasons and I thought I already knew what awesome was. I can say that Yellowstone and the Tetons are still very beautiful, but the scale is different. The Tetons are one relatively small mountain range, 30 miles or so long vs Banff to Jasper at 200+ miles of Teton sized mountains.

    After many years of driving I can usually do the speed limit in mph by feel, but that kph stuff felt wrong. And I would have gladly driven 50 mph in a 50 kph zone, I had no desire to meet a real Canadian Mountie on the side of the road, if you know what I mean.

    Exactly. It's messed up. I read a highway safety article they're doing a study now to see if they should make all speed limits more uniform for every vehicle

    They should.

    Speed doesn't kill, speed differential kills.
    Self-driving vehicles can cruise 70mph 10ft apart safely because they are all going the same speed, and one will not do something unexpected (barring mechanical failure).
