AHHHHHHHHHH! I bought a Toyota because i was sick of crappy American car making and now i find heavy flaking rust on my frame and guess what??? Its made by Dana Corp an American company. After a little research it turns out that this is fairly common and there was a recall on 1995-2004 tacomas for frames rusting out to the point of failure!!!! Bullshit like this really pisses me off and it looks like Toyota corp is doing nothing about this. I may have to sand blast the frame paint it and try to trade in for maybe a Chevy truck or something that wont fall apart. How about u guys any rusting frames out there?????

Take it to a dealer to get it documented. There was another member not too long ago who after some butt pain got Toyota replaced his frame. Bottom line, if there are more documented cases of rust with the Second Gen, Toyota might be inclined to either do a recall like they did with the First Gen. Sorry to hear about your issue.

There was another member on this site that has serious frame rot, he got a new frame from the dealer....i dunno all the details but in the end truck got new frame.

I would jizz my pants if they did a recall or buy back like they did before.

I have a question tho, i bought my taco from a used car lot, not a toyota dealer, so would that hurt me if Toyota did a buy back or recall?

I really don't get why people freak out about frame rust and blame makers builders manufactures ect... Frames are made of steel. If steel is exposed to weather and a proper costing is not maintained it rusts.. What am I missing here that makes this a manufacture issue? Not being a dick or smart ass this is a real question..

was your truck hit by sandy? do you drive on the roads in the winter after they salt them? I lived on LI for a couple years and know they love their salt up there...

My truck is fine, but I live in California. I'm sure if I was else where, it would probably rust at some point down the road. I'm lucky to only have to deal with rain every now and then. Like someone else said, the freaking frame is metal and exposed to all kinds of crap, so how can it not rust....

I take it you didn't look under the truck before you bought it? Get it documented with Toyota. Clean it up as best you can then paint it after killing the rust with a good rust converter coating. Then maintain it.

It's the speed in which the frames are going out relative to other manufacturers.

It's something that unless you live in an area that has rust issues, you wouldn't fully understand. Everyone expects their cars in the Northeast to have issues with rust after a certain point, but when your frame basically fails with less than 10 years on the vehicle, it's a bit hard to swallow, since once that happens, your truck value is basically nil, unless you decide to part it out.

All rust gets worse if not treated.

So there really is a difference in the speed at witch it happens that is noticeable from manufacture to manufacture on trucks exposed to the exact same conditions? Never thought it would be that much of a difference.. But also like you stated rust is not a issue here at all..

By the way who ever left the rep saying I was a d bag and drive a pre runner ... I hope it made you feel better.. Sorry you are having a bad day and hope I was able to help..

Lol I found it amusing. I was asking a real question about something I did not understand rust is something on frames I had never had to deal with I had no clue there was such a issue with different manufactures and how bad they rust ..

Guess someone got butt hurt by my ignorance.. And I bet its someone who has 4x4 and does less off roading then I do in my prerunner ..

Like I said hope I helped them feel better lol and back to the question is toyota using a cheaper steel for there frames or is it what preventative measures they take compared to others ?
