yeah, dont spray simple green on your engine while it's hot. It'll make everything smell weird. And I usually open up the hood and spray it down with simple green, then I vacuum/detail the inside, and by the time I'm done, it'll have soaked in and I'll spray off the engine and close the hood. Works everytime! :)

Ok so you guys are saying I can spray the degreaser and just water the engine down? I mean I do not have to worry about watering down wires and stuff?

I'm not an expert on this since I have only done it about five times or so. Before washing I would suggest covering up the fuse box, alternator, things like that with a rag or something. But I'm guessing you already know about doing this, but I thought I would throw that out there anyways.

no need to do that really....just avoid spraying water into the air intake...but it's inside the fender well so no worries on the tacoma...just drive it around a bit afterwards to dry all the water off a bit...not necessary but a good idea

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
Simple Green Simple Green Simple Green!! Provided your engine isn't completely dirty, Simple Green will work wonders. Keep up on it and you will be amazed at how nice it works. Just got rid of my 10 yr old s-10 that's engine compartment looked maybe 2 yrs old. And I live in new york with salted roads in the winter. Actually just cleaned my wifes Xterra's engine tonight. Looks like the day we bought it. On a cool engine, just use a lot of simple green, patience and low pressure rinse. Repeat if necessary. Avoid detailer unless you are selling, it looks nice but atracts dust. At 70mph in a rain storm, where do you think the water goes? Modern engine compartments are relatively water tight. My S-10 actually developed a problem in the end. Spray water in the wrong spot and it would quit. Never did figure out what was wrong. Oh well gone now!!!

Simply green, Low water pressure, avoid electrical, air intake areas as mentioned, and just try to use just enough water to get it rinsed. I also like to run the motor afterwards, the heat helps dry things out and I wipe clean the rest.

what? you never drive in the rain?

Totally unnecessary to wrap the alternator.

I'd also advise NOT to use a power washer.
