I teach at Hutchison High School just down the hill from UAF. We'll have to do a back-to-school ride sometime, after moose season.

I'm up for that. Although the whole not having access to a garage thing worries me a little. I have a tendency to drive into large stumps :p

yeah i was just out there last(kings river) week nice place but very tight single track thats for sure. but still fun and a lot of it requires some lift for sure. at one point i parked my taco and road in my buddies tj for the rest of the trip i wouldn't even do in a modded taco because of the much longer wheel base. :-D but yeah i'd like to meet up with you guys once of this times for sure.

Alright guys I need some assistance with figuring this whole lift thing out. I have read the sticky on lifts and that is pretty basic info, I would like the whys.

Goal is to make a DD that is a competent overland wheeler. I have had too many close calls with clearance. I intend to use the truck and not just have a street queen lift. I do not think that LT is necessary.

I see lots of folks out there just mashing parts together to achieve the desired goal and then I see the "kit" guys. Which is better?

Do I need new UCAs to run a 3 inch lift? (for the most part people say yes for alignment reasons)

Shocks...OMG shocks confuse the hell out of me. So I am sure you could tell but I have a Baja edition and that is just not cutting me clearance wise. Plus addition of plate bumpers, sliders and skids will most likely take away more clearance. So if I do decide to put together pieces of a lift how do you decide on shocks? How do you know if the travel is too short or too long?

    Thanks for the assist guys!

^^ what's your budget? I just bought the OME 3" kit with 885x coils and Dakar leafs. If you add the .25" top plate spacers it will give you a full 3" lift in the front. As for adding armor, it won't affect your clearance that much but you can always switch to the 886x coils if you add a front plate bumper/winch/dual batteries. Then you can also add another leaf to the Dakar set as well.

^this. Tried and true for the application you're seeking and it won't break the bank like my lift did haha. You could probably do the whole thing for the cost of my ORI's.

Old man emu for the win ;) sounds like it would do the job for you. I know nothing about 2nd gen lifts though. Other than it tends to be more money than first gens depending on how high you go.

Well Im not entirely sure seems like 2K-3K will be right about where it finishes just for suspension. Seems like OME is a reliable suspension source and quite a few folks are using them. Since I dont plan on doing any desert racing no need for resi shocks but I still would like them becuase im a fan of increased capability. More fluid and valving which in turn reduces fade and they look cool!

But again I see lots of folks doing Total Chaos UCAs with upgraded uniballs. Is this something I should just get right out of the gate? And U bolt flip kit? Why is that necessary? I see the need for extended brake lines as well as the Diff drop.

It really looks like I can for the most part just kind of mash stuff together from one manufacturer not as a kit or multiple manufacturers. Because I like some stuff from all pro like rear expedition leaf kit with walker evans resi shocks and the UCAs are cheaper and of equal material build quality than the Total Chaos UCAs. so sign me up for those and really might as well get walker evans adj fronts as well from all pro. The only problem I have with that is im not sure on the lbs/in on the OME 886. The walkers are at 600 which is great the that TRD coils that are on my truck. I would also do the toytec diff drop to try and reduce some of the increased angle on the axles.

Thats a big difference from the OME setup but I like shiny things...I know the OME setup will get the job done but will the All Pro setup get it done better? And Icon...nice stuff for sure but they are re valved bilstien shocks so besides lifting my truck I dont see that as an performance upgrade to the actual shocks that are on my truck currently.

    Thanks again guys

Icons aren't revalved bilsteins...don't know where you heard that. If anything the bodies are made by fox then all the internals are done in house at icon.

U bolt flip kit keeps the threads out of the dirt and rocks when you're wheeling. You run the risk of marring them to the point that you can't get the springs off.

Ahh I heard from the diesel guys back when I had my f250. I knew they were valved in house at icon just thought the bodies were Bilsteins.

That makes sense to use the flip kit.

So do you have your Icons on yet?

I was actually doing some more reading at it looks like the Walkers are not ran much on our trucks. Looks like Bilsteins, OME, Icon, Fox, and King. So I may go a different route on the COs. Also Ben im lost on what your ORIs are...can you make me smart please.

Lol, ORI is Off road innovations. It's a nitrogen filled strut that replaces your coil over. So I won't have a spring lifting the truck up front. Instead it's a dual chamber strut that you have full adjustability and control over ride height (top chamber), and spring rate (lower chamber) which means when I air down my tires at the trailhead, I will air down my spring rate in the shocks to allow more flex and absorption, and when I head back down the highway and air up my tires, I fill the shock for better on road handling by stiffening things back up.

And yeah, I got my icons for the rear. 2.5 with resi's. I believe King makes all they're own stuff in house and have recently announced that you can custom anodize ANY part of the shock, no longer just the king blue. They'll do any color. If these icons ever break down I think it's fairly obvious what'll happen haha.
