Towing package advice

brief intro

I purchased a used 07 tacoma and was told it came with the towing package. after some research I discovered(thanks tacoma world) I did not have the towing package.

Went into the dealership and was told they would make it right
I now have an appointment, they are going to install the tranny cooler and larger alternator.

I am not too worried about the hitch and the 7 pin addaptor.

My question is .... I have heard conflicting stories about a supplemental engine oil cooler, but could not find any information supporting that.

sHould I even stress it? I dont even own a boat or anything to tow, just preparing for the future.

Will the tranny cooler be sufficent?

I know if I get a trailer that has brakes ill need to install a break controller...right?

If they told you it had the OEM towing package, then I would make sure you get EVERYTHING!!!

The engine oil cooler is a little thing that's located directly underneath the oil filter on the 4.0L. It's a silver looking thing and 2" high or so.... It's supposed to cool the engine oil and is totally separate from the transmission cooler.

Yes, if your trailer has electric brakes - you need to get & install a brake controller.

 

Depending on what the previous owner towed, they likely only connected the Trailer lights. You have to run your own wire to the brake controller if not an OEM two package, and another line for 12v power to the trailer battery.

Not sure if it is important to you, but I use my 7way plug (self installed) a lot and there is one wire I didn't connect.. the 12v back to the trailer to charge the battery.. this wire does several things. Mainly it charges the Battery in your travel trailer/pup while going down the road. If you have a motorized PUP (Pop UP/tent trailer), and you run your battery dead on your trailer.. you can connect the truck to the 7 way plug and run the motor on your truck's battery. Mostly useful if you are camping without "hookups".

On long trips, you can also run your Fridge on 12v, and that "larger" alternator will charge both batteries it is running from if this wire is connected.
